Lionel Messi breaks record for most goal contributions in single MLS game against NY Red Bulls

Lionel Messi has 12 goals and 11 assists in 11 games
On Saturday night at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, during Inter Miami CF’s thrilling 6-2 victory over the New York Red Bulls, Lionel Messi broke the Major League Soccer mark for most goal contributions and assists in just one game.
Messi broke MLS records with his five assists and six-goal contributions in one game. Now, he has six straight league games in which he has both scored and assisted.
Inter Miami overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit thanks to six goals in a row from Suárez and two goals from Matías Rojas.
“All [goals] were fundamental to the game, but Leo did something historic tonight with five assists and one goal,” Inter Miami coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino said.
“But I can’t forget Suarez’s three goals and Rojas’ two goals. The first, well both, but the first Rojas goal was amazing. But because of the technical aspect of Leo on the assist I will choose Luis Suárez’s scissor goal as my favorite.”
Both Messi and Suárez currently hold a league-high ten goals apiece, and the Argentinean forward leads MLS in assists with twelve.

“With Leo, it’s simpler. We are obviously acquainted with one another, and occasionally you will observe that we move independently of one another and know where the other is. It benefits the team,” Suárez remarked.
Martino and Messi have a lengthy history together; they were teammates at Barcelona and faced off when the Herons coach was in charge of the Paraguay and Mexico national sides. Martino, who has watched Messi for years, says it will be hard to see the forward perform like that against the Red Bulls again.
“He’s not the key component just because of this game. He always is. Today, the association between Messi and Luis in the second half worked well, like old times. When they find each other, the team is able to back them up in the game, and when we find space, they are very influential in the game,” Martino added.
Messi has grown to be a crucial component of Inter Miami’s success very fast. Inter Miami is 2-4-6 (WDL) when he is off the pitch and 15-7-3 (all tournaments) when he is playing since he made his Herons debut in July 2023.
