Lionel Messi, the Argentine footballing genius, began his career with Barcelona in Spain. A player whose career started at a big club had to be special. Messi debuted for Blaugrana on 16 November 2003. It was in a friendly against Portuguese giants FC Porto when a 16-year-old wonderkid stepped onto the pitch.

His first career hat trick came on 10/03/2007, almost 39 months after his club debut. The special case about his first-ever three-goal haul was the opponents against whom he scored – Real Madrid. We all know that El Clasico happens to be the most hotly contested rivalry in world football.

The LaLiga game against Los Blancos saw Lionel Messi bag his first career hat trick. However, the game finished as a 3-3 draw. Five years later, he netted his first hat trick in the national team kit. The 3-1 win against Switzerland in a friendly proved to be a special moment for the Argentine legend.

Although the footballing great has played for three clubs in his career so far, he has had such exemplary moments of bagging three or more goals in a game for the Spanish giants mainly. Even in his two-season-long stay with Ligue 1 giants PSG, Messi failed to produce even a single hat-trick. His Inter Miami career has been fruitful so far. The American fans finally witnessed such a euphoric three-goal moment from their Argentine maestro today.

Overall, Messi has managed to tally 61 career hattricks, which is just five short of equalling Cristiano Ronaldo‘s record (66). However, he has recently equalled the Portuguese legend in the category of just national team hattricks.

Messi’s most recent one came in their FIFA World Cup 2026 opener vs Algeria. It was his first World Cup hat-trick. The Argentina legend is now also level with Miroslav Klose in the all-time scoring record in WC history.
