Four-time champion Italy have failed to qualify for a third consecutive FIFA World Cup.

With 48 teams, three host countries, and a world stage designed for drama, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest edition ever. Despite all the enthusiasm, some of football’s heavyweights will not be participating in the competition.

Six giants with a rich history, a global fan following, and a pedigree have not been able to qualify. The landscape is redefined rather than merely reshaped by their absence.

One of the biggest surprises in European qualifiers was Denmark’s elimination. A country that had recently achieved great things, such as making it to the semifinals of the European Championship, was facing Czechia in the playoff final. After extra time, the score was 2-2, and Czechia qualified after Denmark lost in the penalty shootout.

When it mattered most, a cohesive and well-organised squad fell apart. Denmark’s failure was due to a one-time, high-pressure playoff, not a lack of quality.

Cameroon

Cameroon’s journey to 2026 fell apart. As Cape Verde gained the upper hand, Group D fell away, leaving Cameroon chasing an ever-widening gap. With two games remaining, the Indomitable Lions were trapped in second place with 15 points, behind Cape Verde on 19, and they needed more favourable outcomes.

They had no luck. When the margins narrowed, they were penalised for their inconsistent performance in previous games. Cameroon had lost both the automatic ticket and the opportunity to make a comeback through the best runners-up position by the time the group concluded.

Poland’s campaign came to a brutal conclusion. Robert Lewandowski’s team appeared destined for extra time against Sweden in the playoff final, but Viktor Gyökeres’ goal in the 88th minute ended Poland’s aspirations.

Poland, who mainly relied on Lewandowski for goals and leadership, had been erratic during qualification. However, Sweden beat Poland when it counted most. They were on the verge of success but collapsed at the final obstacle.

Nigeria

Nigeria have also failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026. After a close 1-1 draw in Rabat, the Super Eagles were eliminated by DR Congo, ultimately losing 4-3 on penalties in the CAF playoff final.

A campaign without continuity and identity was highlighted by problems with governance, inconsistent tactics, and off-field distractions, such as an unsuccessful legal petition to FIFA following elimination.

Chile

After losing 0-2 to Bolivia during the qualifiers to stay last in South America’s 10-team round-robin competition, Chile will miss the World Cup for the third time in a row, which is a major blow for a nation that has often played in the World Cup.

Despite winning two Copa America titles in 2015 and 2016, Chile’s new generation will not be competing in the expanded 48-team competition this summer.

Italy

Four-time world champions Italy have now missed three World Cups in a row, an extraordinary collapse for a football powerhouse. After a 1-1 draw in the playoff final, Italy were brutally defeated by Bosnia and Herzegovina in a penalty shootout (4-1).

Italy’s elimination emphasised that, despite a 48-team competition that ought to have made qualification simpler, this is their third consecutive absence. A titan caught in a generational freefall, they are in a predicament.

This will be the third successive World Cup they will miss.
