The 2024-25 season could be Guardiola’s final year with the Cityzens
Pep Guardiola who joined Manchester City eight years ago has hinted his reign may not last much longer.
Guardiola’s contract is set to expire at the end of the 2024-25 season. So far the former FC Barcelona manager has guided City to multiple league victories and a historic treble in 2023. No progress seemingly has been made on a contract extension, rather the Spaniard has hinted that he could be leaving after the next season.
Rivals Liverpool have already replaced their long-serving manager, Jurgen Klopp, with Arne Slot. This is a move that City could also witness. There are a fair few men who can be considered for the high-profile managerial job if the Manchester club finds itself in a similar situation.
Who can replace Pep Guardiola?
Since the City Football Group appointed Michel to manage Girona, his stature has grown in Catalunya. The 48-year-old possesses a high level of game understanding. He has now proven his worth in the dugout brilliantly in the 2023-24 LaLiga season.
For all three of the teams he has coached in Spain, the Spaniard has achieved promotion to LaLiga. Girona’s performance this year has truly stood out. They slowed down a bit after competing with Real Madrid for the better part of the season, but third place was still good enough to get the team into the UEFA Champions League for the first time.
Xabi Alonso, who led Bayer Leverkusen to the German championship, is one of the most well-liked young coaches in European football as well. The former Spain international turned down offers from Bayern and Liverpool to stay with the team for a minimum of one more season.

Julian Nagelsmann, the former Bayern manager who is currently in charge of the Germany national team until 2026, is also mentioned in the report as a potential candidate.
Roberto De Zerbi, who is on the market after departing Brighton after this season, is someone that Guardiola personally admires.
Last weekend, City set a new record by winning the league title four times in a row. However, they were unable to complete a double after losing to Manchester United in the FA Cup final on Saturday.
