Erik ten Hag confirms Varane, Evans and Maguire trained before the Blues game

Both Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof, two Manchester United defenders, sustained muscular ailments that will keep them out of action for at least a month.

Martinez, who only recently returned from a seven-week layoff due to a knee injury suffered in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Brentford, has pulled his calf during training.Martinez took Lindelof’s place in the game after he sustained a hamstring injury. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, both left backs, are already out for Erik ten Hag’s team due to injuries.

Martinez and Lindelof both want to return for the current campaign, but a month-long suspension would mean missing five Premier League games, beginning with Chelsea’s match on Thursday and Coventry’s FA Cup semifinal.Eleven points behind the top four in the Premier League, United is presently ranked sixth. Before games against Chelsea and Liverpool, Erik ten Hag will only have Harry Maguire and Rafael Varane as centre-back alternatives.

Varane was similarly taken off the field at halftime against Brentford, although Ten Hag explained the decision as a precautionary after the game.

However, in a recent press conference, Ten Hag confirmed that Evans Varane and Maguire trained ahead of the Chelsea clash.

Ten Hag: “The good thing is back in about Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans back in training today. Yesterday Harry Maguire was back in training too”.

Jonny Evans was left out of the Brentford game team and did not play for Northern Ireland over the international break, so it is unclear if he will be eligible for selection. Ten Hag had already claimed that the 36-year-old had a nagging issue.Throughout an otherwise lacklustre season, injuries have plagued United, who are currently 11 points outside of the top four.Other players who have missed significant time of the season due to injury include Mason Mount, veteran defenders Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, and Martinez.
