Canada vs Switzerland: Five key battles to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026

Can Czechia stun unbeaten Mexico in a must-win clash to keep knockout hopes alive?

The Mexico City Stadium in Mexico gears up to host the final-week fixtures in Group A of the FIFA World Cup 2026, where hosts Mexico and European outfit Czechia lock horns in what is set to be a thrilling contest.

For Czechia to stay alive after a 2-1 defeat to South Korea and a 1-1 draw against South Africa, they must do something no team has managed before. They must score a goal and win the match against table-toppers Mexico to cherish their slim top two hopes or even finish as one of the best eight third-ranked teams.

Mexico have already booked their knockout tickets, and the results of the next game will not affect their standings, as they are bound to finish atop Group A after two back-to-back wins. Aware that this is a must-win game for Czechia, they will try to keep the ball on their feet to frustrate the Czech back line and disrupt their shape.

This is set to be a closely contested fixture, with key player battles determining the outcome. Will Czechia’s attacking setup manage to beat Mexico’s resolute back line, or will the European outfit get the better of the hosts? We shall find that out soon.

5. Roberto Alvarado vs Ladislav Krejcí

Alvarado has been the creative heartbeat of Mexico from the flanks. At 27, he has several pieces of silverware, including the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the CONCACAF Nations League with El Tri. He is also a Liga MX winner with Cruz Azul.

Krejci has a towering presence that gives him an aerial advantage during set pieces. The Girona defender is coming after a tough loan spell at Wolves, and in a must-win game for Czechia, Krejci must step up and marshal his defence effectively to clinch a vital clean sheet.

4. Julian Quinones vs Robin Hranac

Quinones is a literal nightmare for full-backs as his terrifying pace and acceleration from the flanks make him very difficult to contain. Moreover, he is coming after a highly productive spell with Al Qadsiah in the Saudi Pro League. He broke all records after making 41 goal contributions in 35 games.

It will be a tough outing for Robin Hranac to chase Quinones throughout the ninety minutes, especially in a 3-5-2 formation. The Hoffenheim defender will eye dropping off a yard early to deny Quinines any space to sprint into the box.

3. Raul Rangel vs Matej Kovár

The Chivas goalkeeper is in top form and is one of the leading contenders to win the Golden Glove Award after keeping two back-to-back clean sheets. It is never easy replacing a legendary icon like Ochoa between the sticks for Mexico, but Rangel has been brilliant so far.

Kovar will be up against a lethal Mexican attack, and the PSV Eindhoven keeper must aspire for a clean sheet after conceding three goals so far in two games. His ball distribution is flawless, and he acts as an extra outfield player during possession.

2. Johan Vasquez vs Patrick Schick

The Genoa defender has been defensively resolute and unbeatable over the last two games. Left-footed centre-backs are incredibly rare and highly coveted in modern football, and Vasquez’s technical comfort on his left side makes him an asset for Aguirre.

Schick is coming after a highly productive spell with Bayer Leverkusen. He was also part of Alonso’s side that won the Bundesliga and reached the UEFA Europa League Finals in the 2023-24 season. Czechia have looked dull up front, and Schick has not had a good outing in the last two games.

1. Raul Jimenez vs Tomas Holes

Jimenez’s hold-up play is brilliant, and it will be interesting to see how Javier Aguirre deploys him in the next game, when the results hardly matter. He regularly competes in top European leagues and has found his name on the scoresheet against South Africa in the opening game.

The Slavia Praha defender was brilliant in the last game against South Africa. He will try to make this a physical battle, as it is very difficult to keep a player like Jimenez quiet. Holes has consistently been a reliable and no-nonsense presence for Czechia.
