Manchester United were held to a 1-1 with Brentford in the league

After Brentford’s thrilling draw with Manchester United on Saturday, darts prodigy Luke Littler took a shot at Neal Maupay. The Bees attacker responded immediately with a vicious jab of his own.

Having battled with James Maddison, a player for Tottenham, back in January, Maupay is not the latest prominent football figure to fall out of favour.

On Saturday night, Maupay entered the game as a substitute during Brentford’s 1-1 tie with United. Mason Mount blasted in a goal for the visitors in stoppage time, seemingly ending the dominant Bees’ chances of winning.

However, Kristoffer Ajer responded just in time to save a point for Thomas Frank’s struggling team, allowing Maupay unrestricted freedom to make changes after the game.

Instagram users saw him and Scott McTominay of United fighting during a mid-match altercation, pulling Maupay’s jersey. The Brentford wind-up salesman commented, “This fan was desperate for my shirt [laughing emoji].”

But Littler, a United supporter, was eager to leap to McTominay’s aid, making the scathing remark, “[He] talks more than he scores.” The 17-year-old’s reply quickly went viral on the internet, and the verbal sparring did not end there.

Over the previous few months, neither Maupay nor Littler has refrained from publicly criticising their fellow athletes. By mimicking the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium celebration from a 3-2 loss earlier in the season, Maupay inadvertently offended Maddison.

There was a brief altercation on the pitch afterwards, to which Maddison responded post-match by saying, “He hasn’t scored enough goals to have his own celebration.” Not willing to give up the last word to his rival, Maupay shot back:

“More goals and less relegations in my career than James Maddison. We go again Monday, Bees.”

Meanwhile, after United’s thrilling 4-3 victory against Liverpool in the FA Cup quarterfinals a few weeks ago, Littler poked fun at Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, writing: “What is the difference between Luke Littler and Jurgen Klopp? Littler’s trebles are higher.”Whether the bizarre, developing rivalry between Maupay and Littler on the field of play or in the oche is ever going to end is a matter for speculation.
