Gomez appealed against his doping ban in court

Alejandro Papu Gómez’s appeal against a two-year suspension for doping was denied. Gómez will spend the next two years absent from playing professional football.

The attacker played twice for Argentina in December 2022, as Lionel Messi guided the team to its third World Cup victory in Qatar.Gómez and the team decided to end his contract on September 1st. Gómez was on the bench as Sevilla claimed the Europa League final the previous season. After returning to Italy, he appeared in two Serie A matches for Monza as a free agent three weeks ago, but he did not score.

Before departing for Sevilla in January 2021 due to a falling out with coach Gian Piero Gasperini, Gomez captained Atalanta for a number of great seasons. This season, Gómez is the second player from Serie A to be implicated in a doping case. Paul Pogba, a midfield player for Juventus, tested guilty for testosterone.

This story was supported by Reuters and the Associated Press. Gomez attributed the test’s failure, according to the Spanish publication Relevo, to taking his kids’ sick syrup without first visiting the club’s physicians during a restless night. It was decided that an explanation was insufficient to keep one from being banned.

The player’s sentence was only given this week, even though Gomez and Sevilla were aware of the failed test some months prior. After spending 2.5 years with Sevilla, Gomez departed the team by mutual consent on September 1st. He then finalised an agreement to sign with Monza, an Italian team. The Serie A team confirmed the ban by saying: “AC Monza announces that it has received today – October 20 2023 – from FIFA, through the FIGC, notification of the first degree sentence of the Spanish Anti-Doping Commission, issued against the footballer Alejandro Dario Gomez.

“The sentence includes a two-year disqualification from sporting activities.
