Rodri hasn’t lost a game at Man City since last season in February
Rodri, who scored the winning goal for his team in the Champions League final last term, has been tipped by Pep Guardiola to become a great manager in the future.
Although Liverpool are interested in Xabi Alonso, one of Guardiola’s former teammates, to succeed Jurgen Klopp as manager, the City manager believes his current midfield general would also be great in the dugout. As someone who has played holding midfield, Guardiola stated, “I always had the theory that good holding midfielders can be good managers.”
Wingers rely on their actions but a holding midfielder has to see the game from a global (wider) perspective. Rodri can do it. It depends on the desire he has and if he wants to.’
The Spaniard has far exceeded the £62 million Guardiola spent on him in 2019 to take over Fernandinho, despite having a sluggish start to his City career.
Having Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne in the lineup, the 27-year-old is now regarded as City’s most vital player. He was substituted at the half of Wednesday’s Champions League match against Copenhagen to preserve his energy for Sunday’s match at Anfield against Liverpool.
Alonso was acquired by Guardiola for Bayern Munich, and the two teams together won two German league titles. Alonso is currently in charge of Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen.
