Peru will start their Copa America tournament against Chile
Following a spell with Universitario de Deportes, a first-division team in Peru, manager Jorge Fossati from Uruguay was named head coach of the Peru national football team.
With international friendlies scheduled for June 7 and June 14, respectively, against Paraguay and El Salvador, preliminary rosters for the Copa America in the United States in July were recently released by Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and other major national teams from North, Central, and South America.
Before the event, Brazil and Colombia will engage in exhibitions against Gregg Berhalter’s United States men’s national team. The Yanks manager selected 27 players for the upcoming friendlies.
One could say that Peru will enter the competition as the underdog. Peru will need to do well in the 2024 Copa America after a poor performance in the present World Cup 2026 qualifiers.
In addition to winning the competition twice, La Blanquirroja advanced to the round of four in four of their previous five Copas (1939 and 1975). Their most recent achievement came in second place at the 2019 Brazilian edition.
Given that Peru was selected to play Canada, Chile, and Argentina, it could be considered the underdog.
