Croatia vs England: Five key battles to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026

Can Harry Kane lead the Three Lions to a big win over 2018 finalists Croatia in the World Cup opener in Dallas?

The Dallas Stadium (AT&T Stadium) in Arlington, USA, is gearing up to host a highly anticipated Group L fixture at the FIFA World Cup 2026, where European heavyweights and former finalists Croatia take on a star-studded England side.

Revenge will be on the cards for England, who almost made it to the finals of the FIFA World Cup 2018 before Croatia handed them a semi-final defeat in extra time.

The 1966 champions are among the favourites to top Group L and reach the knockouts. They are led by German gaffer Tuchel, who has previously led an English team to UEFA Champions League glory and knows how to win trophies.

Despite an ageing squad, underestimating the Croatians, especially in the World Cup, would be a big mistake for Tuchel. In the last editions, they were not even favourites, but they went on to shock the world by clinching two back-to-back medals.

Who better than Zlatko Dalic to lead them from the dugouts? Despite an underwhelming campaign in Euro 2024, he knows how to win silverware in big stages after winning two medals.

This is set to be a closely contested fixture, with key player battles determining the outcome. Will Spain’s star-studded attacking lineup manage to beat the resolute defensive backline of Cape Verde, or will the Blue Sharks pull one of the biggest upsets against Spain in the opener? We shall find that out soon.

5. Dominik Livakovic vs Jordan Pickford

The Fenerbahce keeper is coming after a loan spell with Dinamo Zagreb in the Croatian top flight. In 14 games, he kept seven clean sheets. He will be exposed to a star-studded English team and must keep his composure to aim for a clean sheet.

The English custodian is coming after a brilliant spell with Everton in the English Premier League, making 11 clean sheets in 37 games, and will be keen to start his World Cup campaign with a clean sheet. He single-handedly carried England to the Euro 2024 finals after some crucial saves in the knockouts.

4. Josko Gvardiol vs Harry Kane

One of the most expensive defenders of all time, Gvardiol is coming after delivering two domestic trophies with Manchester City after winning the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup. He would be given the big responsibility to keep Harry Kane quiet in the next game.

One of the favourites to win the Golden Boot in the FIFA World Cup 2026, Harry Kane, is ageing like a fine wine. Unarguably one of the greatest strikers of all time, Captain Kane will be raring to go all guns blazing against Croatia in the opener.

3. Mateo Kovacic vs Declan Rice

Kovacic has played for top clubs such as Inter Milan, Chelsea, and Real Madrid before joining Manchester City. Midfield wins matches, and pairing with Modric, he will be eager to dominate the midfield battles against England’s Declan Rice and Anderson.

Rice is coming after helping Arsenal win the historic English Premier League title after 22 years. He is the main anchor in midfield for the English team. He will be tasked with creating chances from the centre of the park.

2. Ivan Perisic vs Reece James

After leaving Tottenham, Ivan Perisic performed poorly in the Croatian top flight. But he is back in his prime after a highly productive spell with PSV Eindhoven, where he had 24 goal contributions in over 40 games for the Dutch outfit.

After a series of inconsistent seasons, Reece James got fit and played for Chelsea in 43 games in the 2025-26 season. Tuchel absolutely adores the Chelsea captain from their time together at Stamford Bridge, and he will be eager to make those overlapping runs from the right flank.

1. Luka Modric vs Jude Bellingham

Modric played a key role in helping Croatia clinch back-to-back World Cup medals, including a bronze in the last edition and a silver in the 2018 World Cup after a 4-2 defeat to France in the finals. The AC Milan midfielder is in sublime form and was terrific in the Italian top flight.

Bellingham is a big match player. The Three Lions were on the verge of a big upset against Slovakia in the Euro 2024 Round of 16. But a bicycle kick goal from Bellingham in the dying seconds of the game saw England not only stay alive but also go on to lift the silver medal in the UEFA Euro 2024.
