The Lions of Teranga are drawn in the group I alongside France, Norway and Iraq.

It was 2002, Senegal were playing their first World Cup game against defending champions France. They shocked the world after beating France. 24 years later, they again kickstart their World Cup campaign against France in 2026.

The Lions of Teranga went on to reach the quarterfinals in their maiden FIFA World Cup. In the history of the FIFA World Cup, we have seen multiple upsets. The West African nation have decimated big teams and have been a dominant presence since the last two editions.

They are drawn alongside France, Norway and Iraq in a difficult Group I. The AFCON finalists are led by Pape Thiaw, who has named a strong squad ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026. However, there are still big names who have failed to make it to the Senegal squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

In this article, we shall take a close look at the big names who have been left out of the Senegalese team for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and why their exclusion is surprising.

1. Malang Sarr

The RC Lens defender, who has previously played for big teams like Chelsea and AS Monaco, is one of the most technically gifted defenders. However, inconsistency to perform, tactical rotations and minor injuries saw him sidelined and restricted to just 12 appearances across all competitions this season. This opened doors for West Ham defender Malick Diouf.

2. Boulaye Dia

One of the big controversial omissions from the Senegalese squad has been Boulaye Dia. Dia was their prime number nine in the last edition and also went on to score against Qatar. He was also in terrific form for Lazio and scored over 10 goals.

Despite that, Nicolas Jackson of Chelsea, who is currently on loan at Bayern Munich, was picked over Dia.

3. Habib Diallo

The Senegalese centre forward played a crucial role in propelling the Lions of Teranga to the AFCON 2025 finals in Morocco. He even had a good season with FC Metz, scoring eight goals. Dropping a physically experienced forward for the World Cup has raised a lot of eyebrows.

4. Nampalys Mendy

Mendy was named in the AFCON Team of the Tournament when Senegal won their first-ever AFCON title in 2022. He has played a pivotal role in Senegal’s defensive midfield, closing out tight games. However, with declining speed and mobility concerns, he was dropped to make way for young guns like Lamine Camara.

5. Cheikh Sabaly

Sabaly is widely considered one of Senegal’s most naturally creative wingers. There is cut-throat competition for his position, including the likes of Sadio Mané, Ismaïla Sarr, Iliman Ndiaye, and the electric young Assane Diao. Hence, Pape Thiaw was left with no other choice than dropping Sabaly.

6. Nobel Mendy

One of the brightest young defensive prospects in Spanish football. Many expected Mendy to be the wildcard entry in the squad. However, he is still young, and it was too early to select a player who hasn’t yet played a full, uninterrupted season of top-flight senior football.

7. Abdou Diallo

The defensive duo of Koulibaly and Diallo dominated Africa at one point. The veteran centre back has played for PSG and Dortmund previously before making a move to the Qatari Stars League with Al Arabi. His fitness and agility were scrutinised.

Thiaw favours players who regularly compete in top European leagues.
