Iran vs New Zealand: Top five players to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026 ft Chris Wood & Mehdi Taremi

Can Nottingham star forward Chris Wood propel the Kiwis to their first-ever FIFA World Cup win?

Anchored on the coastal basin of Southern California, the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, USA, gears up to host the opening match week fixture of the FIFA World Cup 2026, where Asian heavyweights Iran take on New Zealand in what is set to be a thrilling encounter.

Amid diplomatic and geopolitical tensions with the United States, Iran faces the logistical challenge of entering and leaving the US on the same day. They have never advanced past the group stages in World Cup history.

However, given their recent form and their placement in a relatively easier group, they have a golden opportunity to reach the knockouts for the first time ever.

Talking about New Zealand, they are making a comeback to the FIFA World Cup after a 16-year wait. Like their immediate opponents, Iran, the All Whites have never made it past the group stages.

They are led by English gaffer Darren Bazeley, who has won several accolades with the New Zealand youth teams. They have some exciting talents, like Chris Wood, who plays for Nottingham Forest in the English Premier League.

In this article, we take a look at the top five players to keep an eye on in the upcoming match between the Islamic Republic of Iran and New Zealand.

One of the major star attractions of this fixture will be Chris Wood, who played a crucial role in helping Nottingham Forest finish in the upper echelon of the EPL points table.

He has previously played for top teams like Burnley, Newcastle United and Leeds United before making a move to Nottinghamshire with Forest. In the 2024-25 season, he dominated the English top flight, contributing 23 goals in 40 games.

4. Mehdi Taremi (Iran)

One of the very few Iranian players in top European leagues, Taremi will be a key player to watch for Iran. He plays for Greek outfit Olympiacos and is coming off a Super Cup win this season.

He has extensive experience playing across top Asian and European leagues, and he has also played for big clubs like Inter Milan and FC Porto. He will be the go-to man of Amir Ghalenoei to bury those easy chances into goals against New Zealand.

3. Marko Stamenic (New Zealand)

The Kiwi midfielder also has that European pedigree, having previously played for Nottingham Forest, FC Copenhagen, and Olympiacos before joining Swansea City.

He is a reliable presence in the midfield for New Zealand and will be tasked with keeping the Iranian attackers quiet and blocking any counterattacks during transition plays.

2. Mehdi Ghayedi (Iran)

Alongside Taremi, Ghayedi will also be tasked with the responsibility to ensure Iran have no scarcity of goals in the World Cup. One of the big names in Asian football, Ghayedi has played for top Asian clubs such as Esteghlal and Shabab Al Ahli before moving to the UAE.

He currently plays for Emirati outfit Al Nasr SC and is in sublime form. He has 8 goal contributions in 20 games and will be keen to replicate his domestic form for his country.

1. Liberato Cacace (New Zealand)

Before making a move to England, the Kiwi left midfielder donned jerseys of te

ams like Wellington Phoenix and Empoli before finding his new home at SToK Cae Ras with Wrexham.

Cacace will be the key player to watch out for New Zealand on the left flank. It will be an interesting battle when Cacace’s creativity locks horns with Iranian physicality in the midfield.
