Can the Swedish duo of Isak and Gyokeres score against the resilient Dutch defence led by Van Dijk?

Anchored on the flat coastal plains of Southeast Texas, Houston Stadium (NRG Stadium) in Texas, USA, gears up to host the match week 2 fixtures in Group F of the FIFA World Cup 2026, where two European giants, Sweden and the Netherlands, lock horns in what is set to be a thrilling contest.

The Netherlands are coming off a frustrating 2-2 draw against Japan in the opening week of the FIFA World Cup 2026, and their next game against Sweden will decide their fate in the group stages.

Despite goals from Summerville and van Dijk, they could grab just a solitary point from the game after a late goal from Daichi Kamada saw them settle for a 1-1 draw against the Samurai Blues.

After Sweden’s win over Tunisia in the other game, this has become a must-win game for the Oranje, led by former FC Barcelona gaffer Ronald Koeman.

Much to everyone’s surprise, Sweden went on to score five goals in the opening game against Tunisia, going top of the table. They are now just a win away from clinching a historic round of 32 berth. A brace from Yasin Ayari in the last game stole the show.

They are led by the experienced Graham Potter, who has previously managed top English teams such as Brighton and Hove Albion, West Ham and Chelsea.

In this article, we take a look at the top five players to keep an eye on in the upcoming match between the Netherlands and Sweden.

5. Cody Gakpo (Netherlands)

Gakpo impressed a lot in the last game against Japan, which ended in a 2-2 draw. After Donyell Malen, he had the highest expected goal in the game and played for almost the entirety of ninety minutes.

The joint-top goalscorer at Euro 2024, he was the third Liverpool player to make the Netherlands’ starting eleven against Japan. He had 15 goal contributions in over 50 games across all competitions for the Reds.

He impressed a lot in the last World Cup. He scored in every single game for the Dutch team in their group stage fixtures against hosts Qatar, Senegal and Ecuador.

4. Yasin Ayari (Sweden)

Everybody kept talking about the attacking duo of Isak and Gyokeres, but it was the 22-year-old midfielder from Brighton and Hove Albion who took all the spotlight after scoring a brace for Sweden against Tunisia in the World Cup opener.

Born in Solna to parents of Tunisian and Moroccan descent, Ayari had multiple options to play, but he chose to proudly don the Swedish jersey and made the country proud against Tunisia.

3. Tijani Reijnders (Netherlands)

14 goal contributions in 50 games for an extremely competitive side like Manchester City. He even won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in Pep Guardiola’s last season at the Etihad.

Reijnders is in red-hot form and was one of the best performers in Euro 2024. He offers the rapid, direct attacking energy needed to combine with Gakpo and Depay. His performance, however, in the opening game was below par, and he would be keen to impress against Sweden.

2. Viktor Gyokeres (Sweden)

One of the major protagonists behind Sweden’s fairy tale qualification to the FIFA World Cup 2026, despite finishing at the bottom of the UEFA qualifiers, Gyokeres is in red-hot form and is coming off scoring against Tunisia in the last game.

He had 24 goal contributions in over 50 games for the North London outfit Arsenal and helped them win the Premier League and reach the UEFA Champions League Finals. He will be keen to replicate that world-class form with Sweden in the World Cup, as they are just a win away from booking their spot in the knockouts.

Unarguably one of the best defenders in world football today, captain Van Dijk led Liverpool to English glory in Arne Slot’s maiden season, and in a must-win game against Sweden, the entire nation will be looking at Van Dijk to step up and lead his side to glory.

Despite being a centre back, he had 11 goal contributions in 55 games for Liverpool and even scored the opening goal for the Netherlands in the World Cup. Apart from his flawless positioning, reading of the game, and complete aerial dominance, he is a key figure during set pieces
