Framed by the rugged Santa Cruz Mountains to the west, San Francisco Bay Area Stadium (Levi’s Stadium) in Santa Clara, USA, gears up to host the match week 2 fixtures in Group D of the FIFA World Cup 2026, where European giants Turkiye and Paraguay lock horns in what is set to be a thrilling contest.

Türkiye were among the favourites to top Group D, but a heavy defeat to Australia in the opening matchweek has left them shocked. This is a must-win game for them to keep their knockout hopes alive, and anything other than a win would see them relying upon other results.

They are led by Italian gaffer Vincenzo Montella, who has previously coached top teams such as Fiorentina, AC Milan, Sevilla and AS Roma before taking charge of the Turkish national team.

Paraguay faced the wrath of the hosts, the United States, in the opening matchweek of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after Balogun scored a brace. Despite boasting one of the best defences in the Group, they had no answer to the USA’s constant attacks, which left their defensive fragilities badly exposed.

They are led by the legendary Gustavo Alfaro, who is the third Argentine coach to lead Paraguay in the World Cup. He previously guided Ecuador to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

3. Arda Güler (Türkiye)

One of the best young talents in modern-day football, Arda Güler plays for Real Madrid, and at just 21, he has big responsibilities on his shoulders to impress in Türkiye’s first-ever World Cup in nearly two decades.

His left-footed football coordination is extraordinary, and he is coming after a highly productive spell with Los Blancos despite a rare trophyless season. He had more than 23 goal contributions in more than 50 games for Real Madrid and will be keen to replicate his form with Turkiye.

2. Omar Alderete (Paraguay)

After that 4-1 thrashing against the USA in the opening matchweek of the FIFA World Cup, Alderete must step up and marshal the defence to clinch a vital clean sheet against Turkiye.

The Paraguayan defender is a rare left-footed centre-back who is coming off a brilliant season with Sunderland in the English Premier League. 

After making a high-profile switch from Getafe to Sunderland, he kept 9 clean sheets and not only helped a newly promoted Sunderland to survive relegation but also secured an Europa League berth for the Black Cats.

An avid musician who makes football sound like a melody, Çalhanoglu is arguably one of the greatest Turkish players to ever play the game. The Serie A legend has the unique distinction of playing for both AC Milan and Inter Milan and has made over 200+ appearances for Inter.

His spatial awareness is world-class, and he is one of the most technically gifted midfielders. He is a big-match player, and at a time when Türkiye needs him the most, captain Çalhanoglu must step up to lead his side to glory against Paraguay.
