Copa America 2024 kicks off on 20 June

The Argentina national football team and Lionel Messi will once again be roaring to get their hands on the upcoming Copa America title. They won the 2021 edition by defeating the Brazil national football team in the finals.

The head coach of the Argentina side, Lionel Scaloni has already announced a provisional 29 man squad. With the final 26-man shortlist to be submitted by June 12, he has a fair amount of time to further trim his selection. Scaloni is more than likely to do so after the June 10 friendly fixture against Ecuador.

But we all know, Lionel Messi will be the main man no matter what. Argentina’s football team captain played a big part in helping his side lift the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar back in December 2022. Previously he even led Argentina in winning the 2021 Copa America.

But were things as pretty as they look now? In retrospect, both Messi and his teammates have come a long way after missing out on the title on many occasions by finishing in the runner-up spot. The media was scrutinizing them in excess, which even made the legend retire back then. Without Messi being pulled out of retirement would have Argentina lifted two major trophies in the last few years? Obviously a big ‘NO’.

Anyways those things are of the past. At present, the Inter Miami club captain has the following seven records on his radar. And all seems breakable come Copa America in June.

Lionel Messi can break the following seven records in 2024 Copa America:

  1. The former FC Barcelona superstar is just five goals shy of becoming the all-time competition’s top scorer. The current leaders are Norberto Mendez (Argentina) and Zizinho (Brazil), both tied at 17 goals
  2. As soon as Messi steps on the pitch of any of the 2024 Copa America fixtures, he will become the highest-ever appearance maker in solo terms. Currently, he is in the top but tied with Sergio Livingstone at 34 game appearances
  3. His appearance in this edition will make him a pure legend as he is about play his seventh Copa America
  4. With a hattrick, Messi can join classy players who have managed to score two hattricks in this competition. So far the list has 10 such names
  5. How can he register himself as the best goalscorer in a single Copa America edition? Just by scoring 10 goals
  6. No player has ever defended the Player of the Tournament award in this competition. Messi can become the first after previously being awarded in 2021
  7. With four more goal contributions, Messi can tie himself with Cristiano Ronaldo for the most international goal contributions record
