The biggest sporting event in mankind’s history, the FIFA World Cup 2026, is just two days away. For the first time, 48 countries from six different confederations will compete in the footballing extravaganza in North America.

The opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 will feature one of the co-hosts, Mexico, and South Africa. It will be a rematch of the opening game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup when Siphiwe Tshabalala’s goal ignited pure euphoria across an entire continent.

Much in the history of the World Cup, we have often seen that there are moments remembered by the referee’s whistle as much as the striker’s boot.

Whether it be Maradona’s Hand of God in 1986 or England’s controversial third goal in the 1966 World Cup finals, a single decision of the referee can massively determine the fate of the tournament.

Mexico vs South Africa – Wilton Sampaio (Brazil)

Wilton Sampaio will be officiating his third FIFA World Cup in 2026. He is one of the most reliable referees in CONMEBOL. He has been a FIFA referee since 2013.

Samaio has managed many high stakes games including the England vs France 2022 quarterfinals. He is also one of Brazil’s most trusted international officials

South Korea vs Czechia – Amin Mohamed Omar (Egypt)

Omar is regarded as one of the highly reputed referees from Africa. He has been on FIFA’s international list since 2017.

CAF usually reserves AFCON opening matches for elite referees. He was the referee in the AFCON 2023 opener between Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau.

Canada vs Bosnia and Herzegovina – Facundo Tello (Argentina)

One of the most recognisable and highly respected referees in world football, Tello is one of the few South American referees trusted by UEFA. He even officiated in UEFA Euro 2024. He also managed the FIFA World Cup 2022 quarter-final game between Morocco and Portugal.

USA vs Paraguay – Danny Makkelie (Netherlands)

One of Europe’s elite referees, Makkelie is a former police officer. He previously managed the UEFA Europa League final 2020 between Inter Milan and Sevilla. He is considered among the small group of referees regularly trusted by UEFA for Champions League knockouts and European finals.
