After recently relocating to Major League Soccer, Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul has already won the MLS Cup.
Following the victory, he was questioned about which is harder to win, the UEFA Champions League or Major League Soccer.
The Argentine midfielder said:
“I think it’s harder to win MLS than the Champions League.”

De Paul joined the Florida team permanently through December 2029. This move became permanent after his loan from Atletico Madrid from July to December 2025 in a rumoured €15 million deal.
According to De Paul, the MLS season consists of a long regular season followed by a postseason playoff event to determine the MLS Cup.
De Paul mentions the MLS structure, which is very different from the majority of European leagues and continental competitions.
Meanwhile, Inter Miami’s revenue has soared from $56 million to $200 million since Lionel Messi joined the team. The Herons have won an important trophy and are now the first Major League Soccer team valued at $1.35 billion.
Lionel Messi is getting ready for the upcoming Major League Soccer season. Meanwhile, his participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is far from certain.
In MLS, teams compete against Conference rivals in a 34-match regular season where consistency is crucial. However, a multi-round playoff system determines the final champion.
The top teams from the regular season compete in high-stakes knockout matches during the postseason, which calls for a different strategy and mentality than a league table fight.
It highlights how different football success may feel depending on the competitive environment, regardless of whether supporters agree with him or not.
