Sunday League is an amateur association football competitions which take place on Sunday
The sport’s deadliest ringer, the famed Brazilian striker Ronaldo Nazário, was unmasked this weekend by a Sunday league football squad. The forward, who is regarded by many as the best to have ever played the position, put on his boots and joined Phoenix FC, who were at the bottom of NWL Division 8 in Essex.
The now 47-year-old ex-professional, who is as a super-sub with his team trailing 4-0, gave their struggling lineup a lift. Thirteen years ago, the World Cup winner laid up his football shoes.
However, he later put them back on to play for “one of the weakest squads in England” after they emerged victorious in a Paddy Power social media tournament.
R9, who is wearing number 17, made a nice first impression by Rabona passing the ball to start the game with a bit of Brazilian flair. Sadly, not even football royalty could reverse the team’s bad luck.
His interim manager quickly substituted the renowned player back off after he was discovered offside and using his phone.

Brian Edwards, manager of Phoenix FC, stated
“The lads couldn’t believe it when Ronaldo showed up – I hadn’t registered him, so used the name “Dave Walsh” and put him on the bench.
“Sadly, he was anything but a Super Sub. He was late by the time he got changed, and we were already well behind by the time I could put him on – but it’s definitely a moment I’ll remember forever. The rest of his performance? Less memorable.”
In order to introduce a new betting feature called Super Sub, which transfers bets when a player is substituted, Paddy Power published a fabricated film featuring Ronaldo’s antics in Essex. One fan even got dressed up as Ronaldo with a 1998 haircut for the purpose.
