Can Freiburg pull one of the biggest underdog stories in football history?

Tupras Stadium in the Turkish city of Istanbul gears up to host the grand final of the UEFA Europa League, where English giants Aston Villa from Birmingham gear up to lock horns with German outfit SC Freiburg.

SC Freiburg finished seventh in the league stage after winning five out of their eight games. An underdog story is on the cards as a team that never ever qualified for the UEFA Champions League are on the verge of winning the second most prestigious continental trophy in Europe.

In the round of 16, they defeated Genk and they went on to thrash Spanish outfit Celta Vigo in the quarterfinals. They are coming after defeating Braga in the semis to reach the UEL Finals. They are led by Julian Schuster, who can etch his name in golden letters in the club’s history by winning the Europa League.

After that win over Liverpool, Aston Villa have already secured their spot in the UEFA Champions League. But Unai Emery will be keen to bring continental silverware to Villa Park. Their last continental success came way back in 2008 when they won the UEFA Intertoto Cup jointly.

Villa’s journey to the finals have been a tale of absolute domination. After finishing second, they surpassed tough teams like LOSC Lille and Bologna, and thrashed Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals to reach the final of the UEFA Europa League, and now they are on the verge of something historic.

  • Stadium: Tupras Stadium
  • Date: Thursday, 21 May

Players to Watch

One of the major protagonists behind Freiburg’s dramatic rise is none other than the Croatian goal-scoring machine, Igor Matanovic, who also happens to be the leading goalscorer for Freiburg this season after netting 3 goals and an assist in 14 games in the UEL.

He began his career with St. Pauli before moving to Eintracht Frankfurt and has been a reliable player for both teams. He switched allegiances to Freiburg after finding his new home at Europa-Park Stadion in Wolfswinkel, and since then, he has never looked back, propelling his side to the UEL Finals.

But the final hurdle is yet to be crossed, and if Freiburg wants to pull an upset in the finals, Matanovic will need to produce an absolute moment of brilliance to score against Villa and win.

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

Ollie Watkins has time and again proved that he is a big-match player, and what makes him special is his ability to step up during clutch moments. His semi-final goal against the Netherlands in the semi-finals saw the Three Lions under Gareth Southgate make it to their second European finals consecutively.

In 14 games, Watkins has scored 5 goals and given 2 assists, and he will be keen to add more goals to his tally in the finals against Freiburg.

Villa have dominated the UEL so far, and the big credit goes to their attacking unit, including the likes of captain McGinn and Rogers, who have created too many goalscoring opportunities for Watkins to score and bury the ball inside the back of the net.

Match Facts

  • Both sides will meet each other for the first time.
  • Villa have scored 10 goals without conceding in three knockout games at the Villa Park
  • The last time a German side won UEL was back in 2022
