Southampton gain Premier League promotion after 1-0 win over Leeds in EFL Championship 2023-24 Playoffs final

Adam Armstrong scored the match-winner for the Saints
In the EFL Championship 2023-24 Playoffs final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, Southampton defeated Leeds United 1-0 to become the third and final side to be promoted to the Premier League.
Adam Armstrong gave Southampton the lead in the twenty-fourth minute when he perfectly ran to receive a through pass from Will Smallbone and placed the ball beyond the custodian.
Daniel James’ effort from barely inside the box struck the crossbar, just missing the chance to tie the score late on.
The Saints, who will take the place of Sheffield United, Burnley, and Luton Town in the English football premier league, will be joined by Leicester City and Ipswich Town.
Leeds had the better start, but Southampton’s excellent back-four defence allowed Armstrong to coolly slot past Illan Meslier in the 24th minute, sending Leeds behind. Armstrong was denied once more by Leeds’ French custodian, who made an important stop to ensure that Saints led by one goal at the half.
After the break, Daniel Farke’s team was playing well, but they were unable to create any meaningful opportunities against a well-prepared Southampton team. Despite Leeds’ best efforts, they were unable to muster enough quality in the Saints box, and in the end, Russell Martin’s team had to work hard for their victory at Wembley.
Replacement Dan James rocked an effort against the bar late in the game and forced an excellent save from Alex McCarthy.

Even though Armstrong has had a fantastic season for Leeds, Ethan Ampadu uncharacteristically left Armstrong uncontested as he attempted to close down Will Smallbone, and the small striker finished with style. The game was eventually decided by that defensive blunder.
Leeds has now lost all six of its play-off attempts. The team temporarily led the league before finishing behind Leicester City and Ipswich Town in the predetermined promotion slots.
While Farke’s club is expected the opportunity to compete in the Championship next season, Southampton, who finished last in the Premier League in 2022–2023 and Leeds in 19th place, will now be ready for life back in the English top flight.
