Spain are one of the favourites to win the FIFA World Cup 2026, and they have all it takes to beat the best teams in the world. They will kickstart their campaign against Cape Verde, who are in sublime form.

In their past 13 games, the African nation have just lost a solitary game. They are an extremely tough team to beat, coming off a big 3-0 shocker over Serbia. Previously, they even defeated African heavyweights like Cameroon in the African World Cup qualifiers.

They are led by local hero Bubista, who has been at the helm of Cape Verde since 2020. Before their independence in 1975, they were a Portuguese colony, and even today, many of their players play in top Spanish and European leagues.

Talking about Spain, their recent form has been a bit concerning, with just two wins in their last five games. They are led by Luis de la Fuente, who has risen from the ground, having managed Spain’s youth teams before taking over the senior team.

Unarguably, the best defensive midfielder on this planet, Rodri, played a crucial role in helping Spain win the top continental honour after 12 long years. He is the backbone of Spain’s midfield, excellent at counter-pressing and slowing the tempo of the game.

Pina, the unsung hero of Cape Verde, made a high-profile switch from Portugal’s second division to the Russian top flight with FC Krasnodar. He also scored a recent goal for Cape Verde in their recent 3-0 win over Serbia.

3. Aymeric Laporte vs Dailon Livramento

The Spanish defender’s move to the Saudi Pro League with Al-Nassr raised eyebrows. But he went on to shock the world with a defensive masterclass before returning to Europe with Athletic Bilbao, where he played 30 games across all competitions.

The young forward is coming off a decent season with Casa Pia AC in the Liga Portugal, where he spent the season on loan from Italian outfit Hellas Verona. Though it will be a mammoth task to score against an impregnable Spanish defence, Livramento will still be keen to make those counter-attacking runs.

With 41 goal contributions in 45 games for one of the biggest football clubs in the world at just 18, Lamine Yamal, the teenage sensation, is in sublime form. He gave a glimpse of his greatness at Euro 2024, scoring against France in the semi-finals.

Paulo competes in the Romanian top flight with FCSB and will be tasked with keeping Lamine Yamal quiet in the wings. While Paulo is a highly functional and disciplined fullback, Lamine Yamal is in terrific form, and it will be almost impossible to keep him quiet in the wings.

1. Mikel Oyarzabal vs Logan Costa

Nobody knows Spanish football better than Logan Costa in the Cape Verde team. The Villareal defender is the defensive heart and soul of the African nation. Costa plays in La Liga and faces Spanish strikers week in and week out and will be keen to neutralise any threats from the Spanish forwards.

Oyarzabal is a big-match player who scored the match-winning goal against England in the Euro 2024 finals. He is coming after a brilliant season with Real Sociedad and will be raring to go all guns blazing against Cape Verde.
