Five key player battles to watch during Sweden vs Tunisia FIFA World Cup 2026 clash

Graham Potter’s Sweden eye big win over Tunisia in Group F opener in Monterrey

Flanked by the historic Santa Catarina River, the Monterrey Stadium (Estadio BBVA) in Guadalupe, Mexico, gears up to host the opening match of Group F in the FIFA World Cup 2026, featuring European heavyweights Sweden and African outfit Tunisia.

Sweden will be keen to replicate the heroics of 1994. The last time Sweden played in the World Cup back on American soil, they went on to win the bronze medal, defeating Bulgaria in the bronze medal game.

They are led by Graham Potter, who has previously managed teams such as West Ham, Brighton and Chelsea in the English top flight.

Tunisia are the first African nation to win a World Cup game. They also went on to defeat France in the group stage fixtures in the last edition and will be keen to reach the knockout rounds again.

They are coming after a 4-0 thrashing from Belgium and have scored only once in the last four games. The African outfit must make a strong comeback as their World Cup campaign kicks off in Mexico.

This is set to be a closely contested fixture, and key player battles will determine the outcome. Will Sweden’s star-studded attacking lineup manage to beat the resolute defensive backline of Tunisia, or will the African nation pull one of the biggest upsets against Sweden in the opener? We shall find that out soon.

5. Kristoffer Nordfeldt vs Abdelmouhib Chamakh

The former Swansea City custodian plays for Swedish club AIK. He is a reliable presence between the sticks for Sweden. Though Tunisia do not have a clinical attacking lineup, he will need to be careful during counterattacks, and Tunisian wingers and strikers heavily rely on those quick transition plays to net a goal.

The Tunisian goalkeeper is in terrific form, having earned a clean sheet in his international debut against Canada. He is athletic and has quick reflexes. He will face two of the best strikers in modern-day football and will need to keep his composure and remain calm in the next game.

4. Yasin Ayari vs. Hannibal Mejbri

Both players are coming after a decent season in the English top flight. It will be an interesting player battle to watch. Ayari was solid defensively in the midfield for Brighton and Hove Albion, while Mejbri was the technical playmaker for Burnley.

Mejbri is explosive and intense, but Ayari, who has immense experience playing in England, brings positional awareness and discipline. It is very difficult to beat Ayari, as he excels at reading opponents’ passing lanes.

3. Viktor Gyokeres vs. Montassar Talbi

Gyökeres is unarguably one of the best strikers in modern-day football, who played a crucial role in bringing the English top honours to the red part of North London. He was brilliant in the UEFA World Cup qualifiers, helping Sweden qualify for the FIFA World Cup in a miraculous manner.

Talbi will be up against one of the best centre-forwards in the world. But Talbi is the best defender who can go head-to-head against Gyokeres. He also competes in the EPL with Sunderland, where he was defensively rock-solid and helped the Black Cats secure a continental berth.

2. Victor Lindelöf vs. Firas Chaouat

The Swedish captain is a rock-solid figure in the heart of Sweden’s defence. After spending years at Old Trafford, he made a high-profile switch to Aston Villa and went on to win the UEFA Europa League with the Birmingham outfit.

Firas Chaouat is coming after a brilliant domestic season with Tunisian outfit Club Africain, blasting 15 goals in 25 appearances. He is the elite target man for Tunisia, and at a time when scoring goals has been a concern, he must step up to lead his side’s attack.

1. Gabriel Gudmundsson vs. Elias Achouri

Gudmundsson is coming after an excellent season with Leeds United. After Leeds returned to the EPL, he made a high-profile switch from LOSC Lille to Leeds and helped them stay miles out of the relegation zone. He dominated the left flank with his overlapping and accelerated runs.

The FC Copenhagen midfielder also has 10+ goal contributions for the Danish outfit. He is creative and has that UEFA Champions League pedigree, and will be looking forward to getting the better of Gudmundsson to create opportunities for Tunisia.
