The midfielder suffered the injury in their last pre-season game, which was against Newcastle.
James Maddison, a playmaker for Tottenham Hotspur, is expected to miss the majority of the 2025-26 season due to an ACL injury. An injury of this nature typically keeps athletes out for the better part of a year. The England international’s setback occurred during preseason.
Rodri, a fellow Premier League player, had to undergo surgery to repair an ACL tear last season. It kept him out of action for eight months. However, the Manchester City star did make a comeback towards the conclusion of the 2024-25 season.
“We’re pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before,” Spurs coach Thomas Frank said after the Newcastle friendly game.
Frank on injury, life, and more
In a preseason match against Newcastle, James Maddison was on the field for Spurs when he was hurt and taken off on a stretcher.
Thomas Frank acknowledged that the injury was to the exact same knee that kept him out of the team’s UEFA Europa League final in May. But according to BBC Sport, it was suggested to be an ACL problem that will need surgery.

The player was seen leaving on crutches, and manager Frank elaborated on the tough situation.
“Yeah, it’s like in life and football, I think sometimes life and football can be brutal, but also sometimes very beautiful. So I think it was brutal in what happened to to Madders,” he said.
“It looks like a bad injury. Of course we don’t know exactly the status on it. It didn’t look good.”
Club confirmation on the type of injury
When Maddison, 28, returned from Asia, he later had tests done on his knee. The ACL damage has been confirmed by Tottenham. After surgery, Maddison will start working with the Spurs medical staff to recover.

The club have confirmed it’s an ACL rupture.
