Türkiye’s golden generation eye victory over Paraguay in must-win clash in FIFA World Cup 2026

Framed by the rugged Santa Cruz Mountains to the west, San Francisco Bay Area Stadium (Levi’s Stadium) in Santa Clara, USA, gears up to host the match week 2 fixtures in Group D of the FIFA World Cup 2026, where European giant Turkiye and Paraguay lock horns in what is set to be a thrilling contest.

The Crescent Stars shocked the footballing world when they defeated hosts Japan and Senegal to make it to their first-ever semi-finals in 2002 before defeating South Korea to win the bronze medal. But since then, they failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

They are coming after a shocking 2-0 defeat against Australia in the last game. They are led by Italian gaffer Vincenzo Montella, who has coached top teams like Fiorentina, AC Milan, Sevilla and AS Roma previously before making a move to Turkiye national team.

Paraguay are coming after a big 4-1 defeat against the USA despite boasting one of the tightest defences in the group. In their CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers, they conceded just 10 goals in 18 games, the joint second-best defensive side in South America, and they even managed to defeat Brazil and Argentina.

They are led by the legendary Gustavo Alfaro, who is the third Argentine coach to lead Paraguay in the World Cup. He has previously guided Ecuador to the FIFA World Cup 2022.

This is set to be a closely contested fixture, with key player battles determining the outcome. Will Spain’s star-studded attacking lineup manage to beat the resolute defensive backline of Cape Verde, or will the Blue Sharks pull one of the biggest upsets against Spain in the opener? We shall find that out soon.

Arda Guler vs Alexandro Maidana

One of the best young talents in modern-day football, Arda Guler plays for Real Madrid. He had over 23 goal contributions in over 50 games for Real Madrid and will be keen to replicate his brilliant form with Turkiye in the next game.

Maidana is expected to start for Paraguay in the next game in place of Junior Alonso. Maidana competes in top Argentine flight with Talleres and will be tasked with the responsibility to keep Guler quiet in the wings.

Hakan Çalhanoğlu vs Julio Enciso

Çalhanoglu is arguably one of the greatest Turkish players to ever play this game. His spatial awareness is world-class and he is one of the most technically gifted midfielders, who has played over 200+ games for top clubs like Inter and AC Milan.

Another player who has previously played for Brighton, Enciso, must find spaces and create chances from the centre of the park for Paraguay in the next game. He currently plays for Strasbourg in Ligue 1.

Diego Gómez vs Ferdi Kadıoğlu

This will be an all-Brighton clash, where two teammates go head-to-head against each other. Diego Gomez had 10+ goal contributions for the Seagulls and specialises in transition plays.

Kadioglu made a high-profile switch from Fenerbahce to Brighton and Hove Albion in the English Premier League and is coming after a decent season with the Seagulls. He can sprint constantly for 90 minutes straight, and his overlapping and accelerated runs from the left flank can prove to be deadly for Gomez.

Omar Alderete vs Kerem Aktürkoğlu

The Paraguayan defender is a rare left-footed centre-back who is coming off a brilliant season with Sunderland in the English Premier League. After making a high-profile switch from Getafe to Sunderland, he kept 9 clean sheets and helped the Black Cats secure a continental berth.

The Fenerbache winger has previously pied his trade for Benfica and Galatasaray and must go all guns blazing against a resilient Paraguay defence to score the first goal for Turkiye in FIFA World Cup 2026.

Miguel Almirón vs Zeki Çelik

Miguel Almiron has spent six seasons at the English Premier League with Newcastle United before making a move to Atalanta United in the MLS. He had a decent start against the USA in the opener, and he must be more clinical from the wings.

The AS Roma right-wing back is coming after a brilliant spell in the Italian top flight. Paraguay would go all-in attack mode from the wings during transition plays, and Celik’s experience will be vital to close down attacking threats from the wings.
