Lyon have been the most dominating side
The UEFA Women’s Champions League is an annual tournament organised for women playing for different clubs across Europe. This is similar to the Champions League tournament played by men.
From 2001-2009, the competition was known as the UEFA Women’s Cup. From the 2009-10 season, the competition was renamed the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
UEFA opened the doors for all 55 association nations to qualify for the Women’s Champions League. In 2019, a set of new rules were announced from the start of the 2021-22 season. The top six associations entered three teams, associations ranked 7–16 entered two, and the remaining associations entered one.
From 2025, a new format will be put to use. The top seven associations enter three teams, associations ranked 8–17 enter two, and the remaining associations enter one. They will now play in the exact way that the men’s team does.
As far as the winners are concerned, the competition has been won by eight different teams. Six different teams have reached the final but have ended as the runners-up of the competition.
Lyon are the most dominant team in the competition. They won their first title in 2011 and have eight titles to date. They have also finished as the runners-up two times.
Eintracht Frankfurt, Wolfsburg, Umea IK, Turbine Potsdam, Barcelona, Arsenal and FCR Duisburg are the other seven clubs who have lifted the trophy.
Germany have produced the most winners with nine titles and four different winners. France are just behind them on eight and Lyon are the only club who have won the championship for them.
Swedish and Spanish clubs have two titles each and an English club has won the title once.
In the 2023-24 season, Barcelona, Chelsea, PSG and Lyon have reached the semi-final stage of the competition. Barcelona are the defending champions and will take on Chelsea.
