Turkiye are back at the FIFA World Cup after a 24-year hiatus, having won bronze in the 2002 World Cup.

The sun-soaked Chase Stadium in Florida, sitting just off Fort Lauderdale, gears up to host the international friendly fixture between European powerhouse Venezuela and Turkiye.

La Vinotinto missed the World Cup by the slimmest of margins after being just two points behind sixth-placed Bolivia, who booked their berth in the FIFA Intercontinental Playoffs. In fact, Venezuela remains the only South American nation to never qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

They are led by Oswaldo Vizcarrondo, who has previously been at the helm of the Nantes women’s team and men’s team. The South Americans are looking forward to putting a formidable challenge against one of the favourites to top their group, Turkiye.

The Crescent Stars are back in the greatest stage of world football after a 24-year hiatus. The last time they played the 2002 World Cup, it was nothing less than a fairytale ride. They defeated hosts South Korea in the third-place game to clinch a bronze medal match.

They are coming after a win over Macedonia recently. They had to take the harder route to qualify for the FIFA World Cup via UEFA Playoffs after finishing second in the group behind Spain. They are drawn alongside hosts USA, Paraguay and Australia in the FIFA World Cup.

Players to Watch

Yangel Herrera (Venezuela)

Spotted early by Manchester City, Herrera spent years as one of City Football Group’s premier loanees. He played a crucial role in helping Girona make it to the UEFA Champions League before making a marquee signing for Real Sociedad.

However, a series of injuries constricted his season. But when he is fit, he is a dominating presence in the midfield. He will be tasked with the responsibility to control possession and create chances.

He won the Bronze Ball as the tournament’s third-best player in the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup. Despite hailing from La Guira, a coastal port town in Venezuela heavily dominated by baseball, he defied his region’s sporting culture to become the midfield face of his country.

Can Uzun (Turkiye)

One of the brightest youngsters in the Turkiye national team, Can Uzun, is coming after a spectacular season with Eintracht Frankfurt in the German top flight. He registered 15 goal contributions across 28 games for Frankfurt this season.

Born and raised in Germany, Uzun chose Turkiye over Germany and is coming after scoring a goal against Macedonia recently. He plays as an attacking midfielder who can take up the number 10 role effectively.

Vincenzo Montella views him as the future alongside Arda Guler. This will be his debut at the biggest stage and an opportunity to showcase his talent in front of the world.
