With a win in the German Supercup, Leverkusen will become the ninth different winner

The DFL-Supercup or the German Supercup is a one-match event for a trophy. In this game, the winners of the Bundesliga go head to head with the DFB-Pokal winner.

The game kickstarts a season much like the FA Community Shield in England. But what if both the Bundesliga winner and the DFB-Pokal winner happen to be the same team?

That is exactly what happened in German football in the 2023-24 season. Bayer Leverkusen led by Xabi Alonso ended up winning the German league title and also the German Cup. So what next?

Whenever such a situation arises, the runners-up of the domestic league gets the call-up to play the Super Cup. In the case of Bundesliga, it was VfB Stuttgart. VfB Stuttgart who outranked even Bayern Munich in the standings will get a chance to start the 2024-25 season with a piece of silverware.

Bayern Munich missed the German Super Cup spot for the first time since 2012

Bayern Munich missed out on the Super Cup final spot. They have been a familiar face in this event since the 2012 edition. That’s surely some run.

At the start of the season, Bayern signed England captain Harry Kane. Signing Kane wasn’t a problem as he ended up winning the Golden Boot after scoring 36 goals. The problem? Well, Bayer Leverkusen were on a different level this season, outclassing every other side and claiming the Bundesliga while undefeated.

The other route via the DFB-Pokal? The Bavarian giants were stopped in their tracks in the Second Round itself by 1. FC Saarbrücken, a third-tier German club. In this game, Thomas Muller had even given an early lead but the third-tier side pulled the rabbit out of the hat thanks to a goal each in the added time of both halves. Thus, dumping the 2022-23 Bundesliga winners out of the competition.
