Yamal is set to make his World Cup debut.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup in its final countdown, the Spain national football team are currently in the midst of their preparatory friendlies. The tournament favourites will be playing their final friendly against Peru at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla, Mexico.

Manager Luis de la Fuente has confirmed that Lamine Yamal will not be part of the squad for the match against Peru, the nation’s final matchup before the World Cup commences.

The FC Barcelona youngster joined the Spanish camp on May 30. However, he missed their first preparatory friendly with Asian side Iraq, drawing the game 1-1.

“He’s getting better fast, hitting all the targets earlier. I think he’ll be able to play the first game, but that doesn’t mean [he will]. We’ll evaluate if he has to play a little bit, not play, wait for the second game.”

Lamine Yamal sustained an injury during Barcelona’s LaLiga fixture against Celta Vigo on April 22, 2026. Medical examinations revealed that the player suffered a partial tear of his left hamstring. The injury forced the youngster to miss the final six LaLiga fixtures for Barcelona, ending his season.

Despite the injury, the Spain manager, Luis de la Fuente, included Lamine Yamal in the final 26-member squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He arrived at the national team’s primary base camp in Chattanooga, Tennessee, undergoing an intensive, individualized physical therapy alongside injured teammates Nico Williams and Víctor Muñoz.

He was rested for their friendly against Iraq, with his miss proving to be crucial, as Spain only managed to draw the game 1-1. To allow for a complete recovery, he was also excluded from their matchup against Peru. The manager has confirmed Yamal’s availability for Spain’s opening World Cup fixture against Cabo Verde.

Spain’s FIFA World Cup 2026 group

Spain are placed in Group H in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, considered a manageable qualifying pathway for the reigning European champions. They will compete alongside Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and Cabo Verde.
