The Argentine is doubtful to face Montreal FC after an injury scare

In all four of Inter Miami’s competitive games this season—three MLS games and one CONCACAF match—Lionel Messi has played every minute.

In addition to scoring his first-ever CONCACAF goal, the Argentine wizard has been playing brilliantly. Miami held Nashville to a 2-2 tie in their Round of 16 first-leg match.

Miami were behind 0–2 against Nashville thanks to goals from Jacob Shaffelburg (4’, 46’). However, two goals in the second half from Messi and Luis Suarez saved their team.

Messi’s availability for Monday’s MLS match between Miami and Montreal remains uncertain. Journalist José Armando claims that Inter assistant coach Javi Morales disclosed that Messi’s involvement will be verified following a conversation with the Argentine, who is hoping to avoid exhaustion in the lead-up to the Olympics and Copa America.

Suarez located Messi, his former Barcelona partner, outside the Nashville box in the 52nd minute. The champion of the 2022 World Cup squeezed the ball between the opponent’s goalkeeper’s outstretched right fingers and inside the left post with his amazing left foot.

Then, thanks to a wonderful cross from Sergio Busquets, Suarez headed in the equaliser for a perfect finish in the fifth minute of injury time.

This week, Herons head coach Martino expressed concern that the 36-year-old may have sustained “significant wear and tear” as a result of their recent comeback to play. The skipper has scored four goals in multiple matches since the end of February when the new season began.

Inter Miami will try to maintain their unblemished start to the season when they play Montreal, having won two and drawn the other of their first three MLS games. If Messi is out for this weekend’s match, he will probably suit up for next week’s second leg of their Champions Cup last-16 match against Nashville.
