Three British drivers feature in this list.

The British GP is one of the most prestigious and sought-after races on the Formula 1 calendar, thanks in part to its enduring legacy and challenging track layout.

Although the track has been a staple of the F1 calendar since 1950, only a handful of drivers have registered multiple wins on the iconic Silverstone circuit. Now, let’s take a closer look at the drivers with the most wins at the British GP.

Michael Schumacher, considered by many as the best racing driver to have ever walked the F1 circuit, has three wins at the British GP to his name. And although the German driver won the British GP in 1998, 2002, and 2004, his win in 1998 was surrounded by controversy as he became the first driver to ever win a race from the pitlane. However, his legacy has cemented his place as one of Formula One’s all-time greats.

6. Niki Lauda (3 wins)

Niki Lauda is often considered one of the sport’s all-time greats, thanks in part to his relentless struggles and his comeback after a life-threatening accident that left him with third-degree burns. The Austrian driver won the British GP three times in 1976, 1977, and 1982.

5. Jack Brabham (3 wins)

Jack Brabham, a three-time Formula 1 champion and one of the most iconic figures in the sport, won the iconic British GP three times: 1959, 1960, and 1966. Remarkably, these victories coincided with his respective world championship-winning years. However, in 2014, the legend bid farewell to this world as he passed away at the age of 88 due to liver disease, leaving behind an enduring legacy.

4. Nigel Mansell (4 wins)

Another British driver on the list is Nigel Mansell, who boasted an impressive track record and a profound connection with his home Grand Prix. The British driver claimed victory four times, winning in 1986, 1987, 1991, and 1992. His exceptional driving skills culminated in the 1992 world championship title, solidifying his place among Formula 1’s elite.

3. Alain Prost (5 wins)

Alain Prost is another one of those once-in-a-lifetime drivers who have graced the circuit with their presence. The British driver’s mastery extended not only to his five wins at the iconic Silverstone circuit but also to the four world championships to his name. Prost’s triumphs at the British GP in 1983, 1985, 1989, 1990, and 1993 cemented his status as a force to be reckoned with. After his final win at the British Grand Prix, Prost bid farewell to the sport, leaving an indelible mark on the history of Formula 1.

2. Jim Clark (5 wins)

For long-time fans of the sport, Jim Clark is no stranger, as he’s often hailed as one of the sport’s all-time greats. The British driver, not only renowned in the world of Formula 1, conquered the British GP five times. He achieved an extraordinary streak of victories from 1962 to 1965 and triumphed once again in 1967. Moreover, this achievement becomes even more astounding, considering he accomplished all this at a time when safety regulations weren’t a thing in Formula 1.

Unfortunately, it all came to an end in 1968 when he lost his life in a fatal crash at Germany’s Hockenheimring, prompting significant safety advancements in Formula 1.

1. Sir Lewis Hamilton (8 wins)

Lewis Hamilton’s record is nothing short of extraordinary at any circuit he has raced. However, his 8-win record at Silverstone is truly magical, considering his first win came in 2008, when racing for McLaren, the British driver claimed victory in style by lapping almost every car in the race. From 2014 to 2017 and then from 2019 to 2021, Hamilton’s dominance continued with Mercedes, solidifying his status as a British Grand Prix legend.

Although his recent form has depreciated since Mercedes hasn’t been able to keep up with Red Bull, the 2023 British GP could be a turning point for Hamilton as the team is bringing some significant upgrades.
