In this article, we will dive deep into the compelling narratives that have unfolded at the Dutch GP and take a look at some of the most successful drivers to conquer this challenging circuit.
Evolution of the Venue and Track Characteristics
Since its inaugural race in 1948, the Dutch GP has undergone notable transformations. From humble beginnings as a public road circuit to today’s renowned Zandvoort Circuit, the venue has witnessed remarkable advancements. The track itself boasts an intriguing blend of fast straights, exhilarating high-speed corners, and relentless undulations that demand unwavering focus and precision from drivers. This combination of challenging characteristics sets the stage for memorable battles and unforgettable moments.
5. Prost, Brabham, and Hunt’s Magnificence and Beyond (2 wins)
During the Bernie Ecclestone era, the Dutch GP was graced by drivers such as Alain Prost, Jack Brabham, and James Hunt. With such fierce competition during the 70s and 80s, these driving titans left an indelible mark on the race, showcasing their exceptional driving techniques and strategies. Prost’s unmistakable elegance, Brabham’s relentless pursuit of excellence, and Hunt’s calculated aggression captivated audiences and contributed to the race’s rich history.
Moreover, Alberto Ascari, the two-time world champion with Ferrari, also joins the list of the most successful drivers at the Dutch GP, having won the first two rounds in 1952 and 1953.
4. From a Prodigy to Champion: Max Verstappen (2 wins)
In recent years, a new star has emerged at the Dutch GP: Max Verstappen. Rising to prominence at an astonishingly young age, we’ve witnessed a prodigy who has become the pride of the Netherlands and a true force to be reckoned with on the Formula 1 stage. A two-time world champion, Max has been dominant in the Dutch GP during his title-winning campaigns, securing pole position and winning the race in both instances.
Besides, given his red-hot form this season, after winning 10 out of 12 races, the Dutchman is primed to secure his third home victory and go level with the likes of Jackie Stewart and Niki Lauda.

3. Competing on the Edge: Niki Lauda (3 wins)
Niki Lauda, forever etched in Formula 1 history, brought his tactical brilliance and relentless pursuit of victory to the Dutch GP during the 1970s and 1980s. Lauda’s ability to push himself and his machine to the absolute limit and his unwavering focus on strategy and precision cemented his place among the all-time greats of the sport.
Ironically, Lauda’s final F1 victory came at the Dutch GP in 1985. Already having announced his retirement back at the Austrian GP, Lauda was driving the second half of the season with a point to prove that he still had it in him despite the announcement. In what turned out to be a battle of attrition and strategic play between teammates, Niki Lauda held off Alain Prost by just two-tenths of a second to register his 26th race victory and third at the Dutch GP.
2. The Flying Scotsman: Jackie Stewart (3 wins)
Jackie Stewart, the epitome of grit and determination, left an indelible mark on the Dutch GP. With three wins to his name, Stewart’s unprecedented success in the Netherlands showcased his exceptional skill set and unwavering mental approach to racing. His ability to extract every ounce of performance from his car while maintaining composure under extreme pressure made him a force to be reckoned with at Zandvoort.
Out of these three victories, the one in 1973 would be the dearest to him since, with this victory, he surpassed the great Jim Clark as the most successful F1 driver with 26 victories.
1. A Class Apart: Jim Clark (4 wins)
No exploration of the Dutch GP’s history would be complete without paying homage to the remarkable achievements of the legendary Jim Clark. With an unparalleled record of four race victories in the Dutch GP, Clark undoubtedly stands out as one of the true greats in Formula 1 history. His extraordinary driving techniques and strategic brilliance set him apart from his competitors.
However, his first win at Zandvoort in 1963 still lives long in the memories of F1 die-hards. In what started as a horror weekend for the British driver with gearbox issues and an unsettling car throughout practice and qualifying, even getting dragged away by policemen during a crazy confusion, Clark went on to dominate and give a driving lesson on Zandvoort to his rivals as he lapped the entire field to win the first of his four Dutch GPs.
