Formula 1 2023: Drivers with most Q3 appearances
In the fiercely contested 2023 Formula 1 season, the trio of Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and Fernando Alonso not only captured attention with their on-track prowess but emerged as the undoubted stalwarts in qualifying, consistently securing spots in the final Q3 session. Their remarkable feat of missing out on Q3 only once in 21 sessions added an extra layer of excitement and unpredictability to an already thrilling season.
Max Verstappen, behind the wheel of the unbeatable Red Bull RB19, showed his dominance throughout the season, entering Q3 in all sessions except one. His singular setback occurred at the 2023 Saudi Arabian GP, where a mechanical issue pulled him down on the grid, to a P15 qualification. However, Verstappen showcased his resilience, storming back to finish second in the main race, closely trailing his teammate Sergio Perez.
Charles Leclerc faced an unexpected challenge during the 2023 F1 Spanish GP qualifying, finishing a surprising P19 and missing out on Q3. The experienced Fernando Alonso, piloting the AMR23, encountered his share of struggles in Singapore, failing to extract the maximum from his car and falling short of a Q3 appearance.
Q3 Appearances Highlights
- Ferrari emerged as the leading team in terms of Q3 appearances, amassing a total of 39, with Charles Leclerc matching Verstappen’s impressive count of 20.
- Despite a challenging start to the season, McLaren mounted a remarkable comeback, securing 31 Q3 appearances, just two short of Red Bull’s total. The emergence of young talent, exemplified by Oscar Piastri, played a pivotal role, contributing almost as many appearances as the seasoned Lando Norris.
Aston Martin, though making three fewer Q3 appearances than McLaren, faced certain disparities within the team. While Fernando Alonso reached the final round an impressive 20 times, his teammate Lance Stroll secured a spot on only eight occasions.
Remarkably, only one out of the 22 drivers in the competition failed to make it into Q3 throughout the season – Nyck de Vries. However, his replacements, Daniel Ricciardo and Liam Lawson, each secured a Q3 appearance, showcasing the depth of talent within the AlphaTauri team.
