Swords of Legends: New single-player Chinese action-RPG announced

A new sequel to the Gujian franchise

Publisher Wangyuan Shengtang and developer Aurogon Shanghai have officially revealed their new single-player Chinese action-RPG, Swords of Legends.

This game is previously known as Gujian 4 and will be available for PC and Consoles. The game is built on Unreal Engine 5 and is going to draw inspiration from Chinese mythology and folklore. Let’s check out more details in this article.

What to expect from Swords of Legends?

This game is an official sequel to the Gujian series and the best part is that you don’t need to play the other games to know what is happening with the new one. This is going to bring a fresh narrative for the players.

Players will play as an “Underworld Enforcer,” guiding the departed souls and resolving their regrets, bringing a unique twist to the action RPG. Also, this is not a Souls-like and open-world type.

This is more like an Action RPG with a “wide linear” structure. Players will be able to explore at their own pace with a guided story.

The combat isn’t brutally challenging; instead, it incorporates soul-capturing mechanisms that allow you to call monsters as friends, as well as versatile weapon talents and utility items to fit different playstyles.

Story and Atmosphere

The game art and narrative direction appear to be dark and provide a more mystical fantasy tone. This will also focus on the journey between life and death. This definitely has the feeling of Chinese Xianxia.

In the trailer, you can also see the familiar figures like Ox-Head and Horse-Face appear as companions. The story is going to be original and will not tell any myths or past legends.

Each soul you escort has a unique background, such as the woman dancing before the bronze bells, desperate to remain in the mortal realm. This narrative richness, when combined with side tasks, ensures a meaningful advancement for players of all skill levels.

Development insights

Swords of Legends was first started in 2021 and faced many early challenges. But in 2024, they secured major funding and investment, which made it enter full development.

Now this game is in the mass production phase and the first trailer was released to showcase the game’s progress. All the scenes from the trailer include actual gameplay footage and cutscenes.
