Tournament is scheduled to start on 22 January

As the Paris Olympics 2024 are approaching fast, the Indian men’s hockey team is gearing up for a series of warm-up matches from January 22 to January 28, 2024, in South Africa. Hockey India’s tour to South Africa 2024 will feature India facing world no. 9 France twice, on January 22 and 24, and playing against the host South Africa on Jan 26. On 28th Jan, they will wrap up the tour with a clash against the Netherlands, the current no. 1 ranked team in the world.

The event in South Africa will also be a crucial one in terms of preparation, as they will take on Spain, the Netherlands, Australia, and Ireland, in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela from February 10 to February 25, 2024, as a part of the FIH Men’s Hockey Pro League 2023/24.

This is the first time the team India will compete since their participation in the 5 Nations Tournament Valencia Hockey tournament in 2023. At the Valencia event, the Men in Blue’s only win came against France in the final match where they triumphed in a nail-biting high-scoring encounter (5-4). At the same time, they suffered defeats in their first three games against Spain (0-1), Belgium (2-7), and Germany (2-3).

Harmanpreet Singh will lead a 26-member Indian team representing the country on the tour to South Africa. Hardik Singh, and former captain Manpreet Singh, who missed the 5 Nations Tournament in 2023, are back in the team. Hardik, who was awarded the FIH Player of the Year in 2023, has again been given the deputy captain role.

Araijeet Singh Hundal and Boby Singh Dhami are also included in the team, thanks to their outstanding performances at the Men’s FIH Hockey Junior World Cup 2023.

It is worth noting that the Indian men’s hockey team booked a spot for the Paris Olympics 2024 after winning a gold medal at the Asian Games 2022 in 2023. In the previous Olympics in Tokyo, the Indian team broke a 41-year dry spell of winning an Olympic medal by beating Germany 5-4 to secure the bronze medal.
