The Indian women’s hockey team will face China in the final of Women’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025 on Sunday. Both teams will be eyeing their third title in the competition’s history, with India hoping to lift its first since 2017.

China will have to go way back to 2009 for their last title win in the tournament. They were runners-up in 2017 when India beat them 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

The hosts will, however, enter Sunday’s final as the favourites having won each of their six matches so far in the tournament while conceding only once. They also defeated India in dominant fashion when they clashed in the Super4s stage of the tournament.

China finished the Super4s stage on top, winning each of their three matches after also having done the same in the pool phase. They are the only team to win all of their matches in this edition of the tournament.

While India will be the underdogs in the final, they will hope to spring a surprise and lift a third title. That the only goal China has conceded in this edition of the tournament came against them will give coach Harendra Singh’s side some confidence heading into the title match.

However, they have been far from their best and won just one match in the Super4s phase, which came against South Korea. India were beaten comprehensively by China (1-4) and were held by Japan (1-1) yesterday.

So, the task at hand will be difficult not just on the pitch but on the stands too with their opponents the home team and title favourites.

The winner of this final will join South Korea and Japan as the joint-most successful team in the competition. Both South Korea and Japan have three titles each while India and China have won two so far.

When they met in the Super4s phase, India showed impressive defensive prowess to stay alive in the game until the final quarter where things fell flat as they conceded two goals late in the match.

Until the fourth quarter, they had kept China’s lead to just one goal but needing to go all-out in the final quarter for the all-important equaliser left gap in India’s defense which China exploited to win the encounter.
