India’s only title across men’s and women’s categories came in 1975
India have a rich history at the FIH Hockey World Cup, with the men’s team having won the prestigious tournament once and the women’s team having reached the semi-finals in the inaugural edition.
While the men’s side have enjoyed multiple podium finishes, including a historic title triumph, the women’s team have not been able to replicate their best-ever performance in subsequent editions.
With the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 underway, India will be aiming to improve on those previous performances and add another memorable chapter to their World Cup history. Here’s a look at the best-ever finishes achieved by India’s men’s and women’s teams at the tournament.

The Indian men’s hockey team recorded its best-ever finish at the World Cup in 1975, when it lifted the title in Kuala Lumpur.
India defeated Pakistan 2-1 in a closely contested final, with Ashok Kumar scoring the decisive goal to secure the country’s only Hockey World Cup title.
The victory came after India defeated Malaysia in the semi-finals to book their place in the title match. It was the culmination of an impressive run in the early editions of the tournament and remains one of the most significant achievements in Indian hockey history.
India had already reached the podium in the first two editions of the Men’s Hockey World Cup, finishing third in 1971 before improving to second place in 1973.

The 1971 edition, held in Barcelona, was the inaugural Men’s Hockey World Cup. India defeated Kenya in the third-place match to claim the bronze medal.
Two years later, India went one step further and reached the final of the 1973 World Cup in Amstelveen. However, they were beaten by hosts Netherlands and had to settle for silver.
India finally went all the way in 1975, defeating Pakistan in the final to become world champions.
The men’s team have not been able to return to the World Cup final since their 1975 triumph. Their closest finish in recent editions came in 2023, when India hosted the tournament.
India defeated Belgium in the quarter-finals before losing to eventual champions Germany in the semi-finals. They subsequently lost the bronze-medal match to the Netherlands and finished fourth.
For the men’s team, therefore, the benchmark remains their historic 1975 title.

India reached the semi-finals in Mandelieu, France, after putting together an impressive campaign in the first-ever Women’s Hockey World Cup.
However, they missed out on a place in the final and subsequently lost the bronze-medal match to West Germany.
As a result, India finished fourth in the 1974 Women’s World Cup. It remains the women’s team’s best-ever finish in the history of the competition.
