The Indian women’s hockey team delivered a commanding performance in their second Pool D fixture at the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026.
After having settled for a 2-2 draw against China in their opening match, India responded in style against South Africa, producing a display that was impressive from start to finish across every department of the game.
The result provided India with a major boost in their Pool D campaign as they look to secure their place in the next stage of the tournament. The Indian side showed plenty of attacking intent throughout the contest, with several players making their mark on the scoresheet.
The emphatic performance also saw India achieve a significant milestone in their Women’s Hockey World Cup history.

India registered their biggest-ever victory in the history of the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup after a 6-1 drubbing of South Africa in their Pool D encounter on Tuesday, August 18.
The emphatic victory surpassed India’s previous record for their biggest winning margin at the Women’s Hockey World Cup, which had stood for 52 years.
India had previously recorded their biggest win in the competition during the inaugural edition in 1974, when they defeated Spain 4-1.
India’s historic win over South Africa’s campaign was a major boost after they were held to a 2-2 draw by China in their opening Pool D fixture.
India were dominant from the outset against South Africa and eventually had six different goalscorers on the scoresheet.
Sunelita Toppo, Navneet Kaur, Deepika, Sushila Chanu, Lalremsiami and Sakshi Rana all found the back of the net as India produced one of their most complete attacking displays in World Cup history.
India opened the scoring in the 11th minute through Sunelita Toppo. Sakshi Rana’s attempt travelled towards the far post before Toppo reacted quickly to put India ahead.
Navneet Kaur doubled the advantage six minutes later. India won a penalty corner, and Navneet changed the angle before unleashing a low slap hit into the backboard to make it 2-0.
The Indian side continued to control proceedings and added a third goal in the 25th minute. Deepika’s drag-flick took a deflection, with Sushila Chanu reacting quickest to get the final touch and send India into half-time with a commanding 3-0 lead.
India showed no signs of slowing down after the break.
Deepika got her name on the scoresheet in the 38th minute after combining with Navneet Kaur and Baljeet Kaur. She controlled the ball on her backhand before producing a powerful tomahawk that found the bottom far corner.
Lalremsiami then extended India’s advantage in the 44th minute. Neha’s aerial ball found Lalremsiami, who cut onto her reverse before firing past the South African goalkeeper.
Just a minute later, Sakshi Rana completed India’s sixth goal. Salima Tete carried the ball forward before finding Ishika, whose effort struck the post. Rana reacted fastest to the rebound and smashed a reverse hit into the top corner to make it 6-0.
South Africa eventually pulled one back in the 55th minute through Kayla de Waal, who converted a penalty corner. However, the goal proved to be little more than a consolation as India comfortably saw out the remainder of the contest.
The six-goal haul was particularly notable because India had six different players contributing to the scoresheet. Their attacking variety was complemented by a strong defensive display, with South Africa unable to seriously threaten India’s lead for large periods of the match.
India also finished with 51.6% possession, 16 shots on target and 25 circle penetrations, while converting two of their six penalty corners.
India’s previous record World Cup victory had stood since 1974, when they defeated Spain 4-1 in the tournament’s inaugural edition. That remains a landmark campaign for Indian women’s hockey, with the team finishing fourth, their best-ever finish in the competition.
However, more than five decades later, the record has finally been rewritten. India’s 6-1 victory over South Africa is now their biggest-ever win in the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup.
