Hosts and three-time winners India will face defending champions South Korea in the final of Men’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025 on Sunday (September 7).

The Indian men’s hockey team last won the title in 2017 while they finished third in the previous edition in 2022. Meanwhile, South Korea, champions last time, won back-to-back titles in 2009 & 2013. They finished fourth in 2017 when India defeated Malaysia to lift their title their title.

Craig Fulton’s side advanced to the final by finishing on top of the Super 4s phase, having also topped their pool in the earlier stages. They are also the only unbeaten team so far in the tournament and have won all of their matches barring the clash against Korea in the Super 4s opener.

Their opponents, Korea, have lost twice already in the competition. Korea made the final by finishing second in the Super 4s phase, ahead of Malaysia and China. They won, drew and lost a match each in the knockout round, with the defeat coming against China (0-3). Meanwhile, they were also thrashed by Malaysia (1-4) in the pool stages.

Hosts India are the favourites for the title but Korea will be confident, having held the Men in Blue to a 2-2 draw when they met earlier in this tournament in Rajgir.

Korea are the most successful nation in the Men’s Hockey Asia Cup with five titles to their name while India are close behind with three titles. Pakistan (3) are the only other nation to win a title in the competition history.

When they last met, India went ahead within in the opening 10 minutes through Hardik Singh’s brilliant solo goal. But they were soon behind after Korea scored twice inside three minutes. Korea’s first came from the penalty stroke after Jugraj Singh was deemed to have committed a foul.

Jihun Yang stepped up and found the top right corner with a powerful shot to score the equaliser.

Two minutes later in the 14th minute, Korea won a penalty corner which was successfully converted by Hyeonhong Kim’s (14′) via a drag-flick to put the defending champions ahead.

India kept pushing but couldn’t find the net with Korea’s goalie proving tough to beat. Eventually, with seven minutes remaining, Sukhjeet Singh found Mandeep with space at the far net and all the forward had to do was tuck the ball in, two yards out.
