The Indian women’s hockey team will play four matches each in the London and Antwerp legs.

The Indian women’s hockey team begins their FIH Pro League 2024-25 campaign on June 14. After playing eight matches at home (in Bhubaneswar) earlier this year, they will play their remaining matches on the continent of Europe.

The second half of the Women’s Pro League 2024-25 competition sees all teams assemble in Europe. The matches will be played at five venues, namely Valencia, Amstelveen, Antwerp, London, and Berlin.

India, ranked ninth in the world, commence their second leg at London against Australia, before playing World No. 2 Argentina at the same location with a day’s gap. They will then move to Antwerp, where they will face the home team and World No. 2 Belgium. The side will then end their campaign against the Paris Olympics silver medalists, China.

The Harendra Singh-coached side is currently sixth in the table with 9 points from 8 matches, which includes two straight wins, two draws (one with a shootout bonus point), and four straight losses. The team would aim to avoid relegation and remain in the league, which would enable them to play against high-quality teams, ultimately leading to improvements in their skills, fitness, and temperament.

The Salima Tete-led side had shown a lot of spark and resilience in the home leg, competing hard against some of the world’s best teams. A famous draw with a bonus against reigning Olympic Champions, the Netherlands, has now put them in a prime position to avoid relegation.

With England at the bottom spot, having four points less than them, India would be very confident at this point. However, the Women in Blue would still need to be at their best and produce results against higher-ranked teams if they are to widen the gap further and ensure a strong finish to what has been an impressive campaign.

What is the format of the tournament?

The format of the competition is such that nine teams face each other in a round-robin tournament to be held between November and June. The competition follows the home-and-away principle but is divided into date blocks. For ease of logistics, multiple teams assemble at one location, with each side playing two matches against the other.

The team finishing at the top of the table after all games have been concluded will be awarded the trophy. The bottom-placed team will face relegation and be replaced by the Women’s FIH Nations Cup winner, who will compete in the next edition.

The champion will also earn direct qualification for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026. The Netherlands and Belgium have already qualified for the quadrennial tournament as hosts of the competition. Germany ensured a spot for themselves by finishing second in the previous edition of the Pro League (they were awarded the quota since the Dutch finished at the top).
