India finished eighth last season.

The Indian women’s hockey team will kick off their 2024-25 Women’s FIH Pro League season at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on February 15 (Saturday). They will face England twice over the weekend, on February 18 and 19. After that, India will play Germany on February 21 and 22, and then the Netherlands on February 24 and 25.

Last season, India struggled, winning only three of 16 matches and finishing eighth. They faced tough times, but wins against Australia and the USA helped them avoid relegation. So, will this season be the one where they turn things around?

Coach Harendra Singh would be banking on experience, with captain Salima Tete leading a squad packed with veterans like Savita Punia, Vandana Katariya, and Sushila Pukhrambam. Vandana is back after missing the Asian Champions Trophy-winning campaign! That’s a huge boost for India’s attack and Plus, young stars like Lalremsiami, Sharmila Devi, and Mumtaz Khan add firepower.

However, India have some recurring problems as they struggle to score against top European teams. While they were clinical in Rajgir during the Asian Champions Trophy, breaking down high-quality defenses has been an issue.

The pressure is on forwards like Rutuja Pisal and Sonam, who impressed in the Women’s Hockey India League (WHIL). Rutuja, a clutch performer in Odisha Warriors’ title-winning run, and Sonam, the highest Indian scorer in the WHIL, will be crucial in converting India’s attacking play into goals.

The challenge is clear. England, Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands are all ranked higher and have more depth. While some of them may experiment with their lineups, India will have to be at their absolute best. The Asian Champions Trophy triumph showed progress, but the Pro League is a different beast.
