Indian Sports Calendar April 2024: Events to watch in third week

Asian Wrestling Olympics Qualifier to commence this week.

After a challenging week in the Indian sports calendar, Indian athletes are gearing up to bounce back with strong performances. The badminton players experienced a tough time at the Badminton Asia Championships, with none reaching the quarterfinals. Additionally, the Indian hockey team faced a 0-5 defeat against Australia in a five-test match series. In table tennis, the mixed doubles team of Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Manika Batra did not secure Olympic qualification.

This week promises to be action-packed, with several Indian athletes vying for Olympic quota places. The Asian Wrestling Olympic Qualifier is set to take place, where Indian wrestlers will aim to secure their spots. Sailor Nethra Kumanan will also be competing to earn her sailing quota for the Paris Olympics.

Events to watch in third week of April in Indian Sports Calendar


Triple jumper Abdulla Aboobacker will be in action at the Xiamen leg of Diamond League and will aim to perform well.

The most prestigious tournament in chess is going on in Canada. Vidit Gujrathi, Gukesh D, RameshBabu Praggnandhaa, Koneru Humpy and R Vaishali are the five Indians currently competing in the FIDE candidates tournament.


The IPL 2024 has enters its middle stage with teams now either racing away to ensure a place in playoffs or falling behind. The highest total in the IPL has already been rewritten thrice this season.


Mohun Bagan Super Giant lifted their maiden Shield in the Indian Super League after beating Mumbai City FC in a thrilling title-clash at the VYBK on April 15. The match also ended the league phase of the ISL with the league now heading to knockouts stages. The ISL knockouts final will take place on May 4.

The Indian gymnasts will be in action at the FIG World Cup. This will give them points which will help them qualify for the Paris Olympics. 2016 Olympian Dipa Karmakar and 2020 Olympian Pranati Nayak will be in action in Doha.

The Indian judokas will be in action at the Asian Judo Championships 2024, scheduled in Hong Kong, China.

  • April 20-23: Asian Judo Championships


The final Olympic qualification for sailing will see Nethra Kumanan in action. Vishnu Saravanan is the only one who has secured a sailing quota for the Paris Olympics 2024 so far.

Table Tennis

The ITTF Men’s and Women’s Singles World Cup will take place in Macao from April 15 to 21. Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula will represent India in the tournament. Apart from that a couple of youth tournaments will also be taking place this week.

  • April 15-21: ITTF Men’s and Women’s World Cup, Macao
  • April 17-20: WTT Youth Contender Luxembourg 2024
  • April 17-20: WTT Youth Contender Santiago 2024


The Asian Wrestling Championships will continue this week. India has sent a second-string team as the main athletes will focus on the Asian Olympic Qualifier. Indian grapplers will look to book their quota places at the Olympic qualifier, which will be the penultimate chance to qualify for the Olympics. The top two players in each category will qualify for Paris.
