Indian Sports Calendar October 2024: Major events to follow in first week

Couple of junior championships will take place this week.

This week in the Indian sports calendar, all eyes will be on the Badminton Junior Mixed Team Championships 2024 (Suhandinata Cup). India will eye its first-ever medal in the tournament, having previously achieved a best finish of fourth place that came in the 2009 edition. Apart from this, other age-group tournaments like the Archery Asian Youth Championships and Shooting Jr World C’ships are also going on.

Following the conclusion of the second test (end on Tuesday), the Indian men’s cricket team will host Bangladesh in a three-match T20I series, starting from October 6. Moreover, the prestigious WTT China Smash continues this week with some Indian challenge still alive while Sumit Nagal, Rohan Bopanna and more Indian tennis stars will be in action in the Shanghai ATP 1000 Masters.

There are also football, golf, squash and fencing tournaments to follow this week.

Major events to follow in first week of October in Indian sports calendar

Archery

The Asian Youth Archery Championships will continue this week. India have been performing well and will aim to bag more medals in the competition.

Badminton

The mixed junior team championships will start this week and Team India is in an easy group with Turkey, Mauritius, Peru and Azerbaijan. India has never won any medal in the Jr mixed team championships and will aim to change that in this edition.

  • September 30-5 October: BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championships (Suhandinata Cup)

Cricket

Following the conclusion of the test series on Tuesday, the focus will shift to the three-match T20I series, starting October 6. Suryakumar Yadav will lead team India in the series.

Fencing

The Indian epee fencers will be in action and aim to have a good finish in the tournament. Some key fencers will be Udaivir and Tanishika Khatri.

  • October 5-6: Tournoi Satellite Epee, Geneva
  • October 5-6: Tournoi Satellite Sabre, Bulgeria

Football

The top-flight domestic league will head into matchweek 4 this week. Bengaluru FC lead the points standings, while the Mumbai City, East Bengal and Hyderabad FC are the bottom three.

Golf

Diksha Dagar will be among the Indian participants in this tournament in China.

  • October 4-6: Aramco Team Series — Shenzhen, China

Shooting

The ISSF Junior World Championships last weekend continues this week. India has already won five medals in the opening two days of the tournament.

Squash

Ramit Tandon will be the sole Indian in the platinum-level tournament held in Qatar. He will look to reach the deeper stages making some upsets.

Table Tennis

The prestigious WTT China Smash continues this week. Several top Indian paddlers, including Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula, bowed out from the opening round itself.

Tennis

Sumit Nagal and Rohan Bopanna with his new partner Ivan Dodig will be in action in the ATP 1000 tournament. Yuki Bhambri is the first alternate in the men’s doubles section.

  • September 30-13 October: Shanghai Masters (ATP 1000)
