Neil Druckmann won’t be part of the next season

The fans and gamers are pretty excited as HBO and Max content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys have recently hinted that The Last of Us Season 3 is targeting a 2027 release.

The exact release date or confirmation is yet to be announced. This was reported in an interview with Variety. Let’s find out more details in this article.

2027 premiere and creative plans for The Last of Us Season 3

In the interview with Variety, Casey Bloys confirmed that they are looking forward to the 2027 release of the next season of The Last of Us.

He also shared more information, saying that the showrunner Craig Mazin is still deciding between two more seasons or one extended finale.

Bloys is letting Craig lead the upcoming seasons and totally trust his judgment for the series. Here is the official statement:

The series is definitely planned for 2027. Craig is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn’t been decided yet, and I’m following Craig’s lead on that.

Neil Druckmann’s Departure and Legacy

Casey Bloys also talked about Neil Druckmann stepping back as the showrunner to focus on the upcoming Naughty Dog game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

Here’s what he has to say about Neil:

It was fantastic to have Neil involved. A lot of people don’t realize that Neil has a full time job creating video games and running Naughty Dog. It’s a really big job that he’s got. So I understand why he needs to focus on that. But I believe he’s given us a good blueprint with the show. And obviously Craig is a pro, so I think we’ll be in excellent shape. I’m not worried at all.

Conclusion

Season 2, which ended recently, had a mixed run. The premiere got 5.3 million viewers, a 10% increase over Season 1’s 4.7 million, but the finale drew only 3.7 million, half of Season 1’s 8.2 million.

However, Season 1 viewership increased by 150% prior to Season 2, indicating long-term appeal. Hopefully, The Last of Us Season 3 can be a lot better than Season 2.
