National Games 2023 November 3rd Results: Shivpal Singh wins gold in men's javelin throw, Kishore Kumar Jena settles for bronze

Services getting closer to the top spot in medals tally.
Sunil Joliya Jinabhai from Gujarat shattered the Games record to secure the gold medal in the Men’s 3000 M race, while swimmers Nina Venkatesh and Dhinidhi Desinghu from Karnataka continued their exceptional performance by claiming their fifth gold in the National Games 2023.
Hosts Goa achieved their best performance in the Games, securing six gold medals in Sepak Takraw, which contributed to their improved standing in the rankings. However, the top three positions in the medal table remained unchanged.
Maharashtra maintained its lead in the medal standings with a total of 162 medals, including 60 golds, 49 silvers, and 53 bronzes. The Services Sports Control Board is narrowing the gap with the leaders, accumulating 40 gold medals after strong performances in combat sports. Haryana remained in the third position with a total of 91 medals, including 32 golds, 24 silvers, and 35 bronzes.
In athletics at the Bambolim Athletics Stadium, Sunil Joliya Jinabhai set a new Games record with a time of 8:37.15 s in the Men’s 3000 M race. Vithya Ramraj of Tamil Nadu secured the gold in the Women’s 400 M Hurdles with a time of 56.88 s, while Gujarat’s Dhaval Utekar claimed the gold in the men’s category with a time of 51.20 s. Haryana’s Preeti Lamba won the gold in the Women’s 3000 M Steeplechase with a time of 10:19.78 s.

In the Men’s Javelin, Asian Games silver medalist Kishore Kumar Jeena earned a bronze, with SSCB’s Shivpal Yadav and D.P Manu taking gold and silver, respectively. High jumper Pooja secured the gold in the Women’s High Jump with a best jump of 1.80 m.
Tamil Nadu clinched the gold in the 4×400 M Mixed Relay event ahead of Kerala, providing an exciting conclusion to the athletics events.
At the Campal Swimming Pool, Karnataka’s young swimmers, Nina Venkatesh and Dhinidhi Desinghu, contributed to their team’s gold in the mixed team 4×100 Freestyle Relay, further adding to their growing list of achievements with five gold medals each.
In the pool, Sajan Prakash of Kerala, Srihari Nataraj of Karnataka, Bhavya Sachdeva, and Kushagra Rawat of Delhi each secured their third gold medals in the Games, with four more Games records broken.
In the shooting arena at the Mandrem Shooting Range, Sagar Bhargava from Haryana emerged victorious by defeating Paris 2024 Olympics quota winner Sarabjot Singh in a shoot-off to win the first gold medal in Shooting. Sagar shot a remarkable 10.2 in his shoot-off shot, while Sarabjot Singh took silver with a score of 9.3. The two Haryanvis were tied at 238.8 at the end of the 24-shot final. Subhash Sihag of the Services secured the bronze with 217.3.
In the wrestling arena, Haryana continued its dominance by winning five of the six gold medals, with Uttar Pradesh securing the other gold.
In Sepak Takraw at the Fatorda Multipurpose Hall, the host state, Goa, claimed six of the eight gold medals on offer. Goa’s men secured all four gold medals, while the women won two golds along with one silver and one bronze. Manipur earned the other two gold medals in the event.
At the Goa Engineering College in Farmagudi, Olympian Deepika Kumari advanced to the final of the Women’s Recurve event, beating Haryana’s Tamanna 6-4 in the semis. She will face Sangeeta of Haryana, who won her semi-final match 6-2 against Gujarat’s Bhagora Vargishkumar.
In the men’s category, giant killer Mukesh Boro, who had defeated Olympian Atanu Das in the second round, qualified for the finals by beating SSCB’s Gora Ho in the shoot-off. He will face Uttarakhand’s Kartik Rana, who also caused an upset by defeating Olympian Jayanta Talukdar in the first round. Kartik comprehensively defeated Bhagwat Singh of Chhattisgarh 7-1 in the semis to book his place in the finals.
