Top five players with most assists in regular season of NBA history
Utah Jazz’s legend John Stockton leads the list.
Global superstars like Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant come in the list of top points scorers in NBA history. However, the list of the players with most assists in NBA history has names that many who don’t follow basketball would find hard to recognise. These are names that have careers as special as the ones the names mentioned above had. So, it is important to talk about those legends of the sport.
Hence, we take a look at the names of the top five players with the most assists in the regular season of NBA history.
5. Steve Nash – 10335 assists
Stephen Nash, a.k.a. Steve Nash, was known for his playmaking, dribbling and shooting skills. The Canadian player-turned-coach finished the league five times as the top assist provider. He provided 10335 assists, averaging 8.5 per game.
He started his career with the Phoenix Suns and went on to play for the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers. The former point guard’s most recent stint in the NBA was with the Brooklyn Nets as their coach.
4. LeBron James – 10624 assists*
LeBron James can do it all, literally. He is the most prolific scorer while also standing at the fourth position in the list of top assist providers in the history of the NBA for regular season. LeBron has 10624 assists so far, averaging 7.3 per game.
His playmaking game has, in particular, been far superior during his Los Angeles Lakers stint than ever before. He averages 7.9 per game so far for LAL throughout the six seasons, 0.6 more than his career average.
3. Chris Paul – 11707 assists*
Arguably the greatest point guard of all-time, Chris Paul, comes next on the list of the top assist providers in the history of NBA regular season. Playing most of his prime years for the Los Angeles Clippers and the New Orleans Pelicans (then-called New Orleans Hornets), Chris currently partners Stephen Curry at the Golden State Warriors.
The point god, as he is fondly referred to by his fans, Chris Paul averages 9.4 assists per game throughout his career. The 38-year-old may be in his twilight years, but he refuses to slow down, as shown by his average of 9.5 assists per game during his three seasons at Pheonix Suns.

2. Jason Kidd – 12091 assists
Next on the list is the current Dallas Mavericks coach, Jason Kidd. The two-time NBA champion (once as a player and once as a coach) spent his best days with the New Jersey Nets (Brooklyn Nets), Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns. Averaging 8.7 assists per game in his career, he finished as the top assist provider of the league five times in his career.
The Dallas Mavericks head coach was not only a great playmaker, but also a great shooter. He retired as the player with the third most three-pointer field goals scored in the history of the NBA.
1. John Stockton – 15806 assists
It is safe to say the record of providing the most assists in the history of the NBA is going to be with the current leader, John Stockton, for a long time. He has at least 3700 more assists than anyone in the league’s history. Playing for the Utah Jazz all his career, the point guard qualified for the playoffs in all of the 19 seasons of his career.
He finished his career average of 10.5 assists per game and nine seasons as the highest assist provider of the league. At his peak, John Stockton averaged as high as 14.5 assists per game in a season. However, John failed to win the NBA title as his team was bested by the Chicago Bulls on both occasions he played in the finals.
