The 41-year-old managed arch-rivals East Bengal last season.
Mohun Bagan have appointed Khalid Jamil as their new head coach after Shankarlal Chakraborty handed in his resignation following a disappointing defeat against Real Kashmir in their recent I-League fixture.
Jamil is an experienced campaigner in Indian football, especially in the I-League, having won the league with Aizawl FC back in the 2016/17 season. He has also managed bitter rivals East Bengal last season and kept them in title contention until the last day, though they finished in fourth position and as many points behind eventual winners Minerva Punjab. However, with mutual understanding, the tactician left the club after the inaugural Super Cup.
After leaving East Bengal Jamil went back to Mumbai, where he was appointed as a director at Elite Football School. Now with him returning to management, things will definitely light up in the league.
The Mariners started their season making a proper statement by winning the Calcutta Football League after a drought of eight years, during which time their rivals East Bengal ruled the state league. However, Bagan did not manage to replicate their domestic form on the national stage and with a horde of winless matches pressure was always piling up on Chakraborty to produce the desired results.
The Kolkata Derby loss to East Bengal rubbed salt into their wounds, but Chakraborty stubbornly decided not to give up any time soon. However, after his side's disappointing 1-2 loss against Real Kashmir, it was back to the walls for the tactician and he went ahead with his decision to depart.

With Jamil's arrival, it can be expected that the Mariners' defensive loopholes will be plugged and having worked with several players during his Aizawl days, it will be all the more helpful for the tactician.

Although, he does not have a moment to waste as he must prepare his side for their next game against reigning champions Minerva Punjab on 9th January.
The Mariners are currently in sixth position in the I-League table with 15 points, nine points adrift of league leaders Chennai City. It will be interesting to see how the former Aizawl boss fares at Bagan and whether he manages to steer the sinking ship to safer shores.
