The German youngster has been the centre of controversies since his omission from the World Cup squad.

When the squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup was announced by Germany, the exclusion of Leroy Sane was one that came out as a surprise. The Manchester City winger had received many applauds for his excellent performance in the Premier League last season and was expected to be one of Joachim Loew’s key attackers for Die Mannschaft. Toni Kroos, his German counterpart, blamed Sane for his wrong attitude which cost him his place at the World Cup.

However, Sane received his call-up for international duty for the ongoing UEFA Nations League. The 22-year-old has responded to the criticism in an interview with FourFourTwo. He also expressed his desire to prove his worthiness for the place in the national team. “I don’t have any problem with criticism. It’s an incentive to refine myself.”

“Sure I was disappointed when I heard that I wasn’t in the World Cup squad, but it motivated me even more and as I already said- I want to show everyone what I’ve got.”

Previously, Kroos had spoken up against the former Schalke player claiming that he needed to correct his attitude towards the game. “Sometimes you have the feeling with Leroy’s body language that it is all the same whether we win or lose. He has to improve his body language,” said the Real Madrid midfielder.

“He’s a player who has everything you need to be a world-class player but sometimes you have to tell him he has to perform better,” added Kroos citing some words of encouragement for Sane.

Although Sane defended his behaviour by stating, “If I play bad then it’s not like I don’t care. I always want us to win games,” he took Kroos’ comments in a positive way and vowed to learn and improve.

Earlier in the Premier League, Sane had faced exclusion from Manchester City squad for similar issues during their tie against Newcastle United, before Pep Guardiola brought him back in the squad by including him in the substitutes’ list in the upcoming matches.

In spite of these issues, Sane managed to earn his place in the national team to play against Netherlands and France. Unfortunately for Sane, Die Mannschaft lost 3-0 against the Netherlands.
