Marseille fined and hit with suspended European ban
There were also multiple reports of football-related violence around the vicinity of the Stade Velodrome during UEFA Euro 2016.
Beginning next season, the next European home game of Marseille will be played behind closed doors. The following game will further have a partial area of the stadium closed off. Instances such as setting off of fireworks, acts of vandalism by the fans and late kick-offs to fixtures against FC Salzburg and RB Leipzig have compelled UEFA to take disciplinary action against the French club.
UEFA has also decreed Marseille to cover for the damages inflicted by their supporters at the stadium of Lyon where the final of the UEFA Europa League was played against Atletico Madrid.
The runners-up in the Europa League last season, Marseille have also been told that their “exclusion from UEFA competitions has been deferred for a probation period of two years.”
Marseille ended the last season on a disappointing note after a 3-0 loss in the Europa League final to Atletico Madrid, in what was otherwise a good campaign for them. Dimitri Payet’s injury early in the game also led to his removal from the World Cup squad. Therefore, this news has only supplemented Marseille's toxic experience from that night, which their fans are desperately trying to forget.

A Liverpool fan was also critically injured by AS Roma supporters ahead of the fixture. UEFA had said that they were ‘deeply shocked’ by this ‘vile attack’.
