Premier League stars head home from England duty
The English duo has left the squad and will miss Premier League action for some time.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli and Manchester United defender Luke Shaw have left the England squad and are returning to their clubs owing to their injuries. Gareth Southgate confirmed the news ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Switzerland.
Alli played the full 90 minutes and Shaw was stretched off in the 53rd minute as England suffered a 1-2 defeat to Spain in the UEFA Nations League on Saturday night.
The midfielder picked up "a minor muscle strain" against La Roja, however, and has now returned to Tottenham for treatment.
"An update ahead of today's training session: Dele Alli has withdrawn from the squad due to a minor muscle strain picked up on Saturday," read a statement from England.
"He'll return to Tottenham for further treatment, with no further additions to the Three Lions squad planned."
Alli now faces a race to be fit for Tottenham's Premier League clash with Liverpool this weekend.
Meanwhile, Shaw is returning to United after he suffered a concussion, Ben Chilwell and Demarai Gray have been called up as his back-up.
Shaw superbly set up Marcus Rashford’s opener on his first England start since September 2015 — an appearance that came just a week before he suffered a hideous double leg-break in a Champions League tie.

The left-back looked like he may have suffered another major injury minutes into the second half against Spain, with his head appearing to hit Dani Carvajal’s hip before sickeningly bouncing off the turf.
The impact was audible from the stands and led to him leaving on a stretcher wearing an oxygen mask and a neck brace after lengthy treatment.
Shaw was later walking and talking and tweeted that he was “doing fine.”

The players are expected to miss at least a game in the Premier League or maybe more if needs be.
